Description
This paper is on the topic of the Native Americans and the Native peoples of Canada and Mexico as well. I have attached the provided guidelines, as well as a simplified version I made myself. It is absolutely imperative that the sources mentioned are used for the evidence as mentioned in the guidelines.
Make an Argument that Addresses the Topic Below
Native Peoples and their new neighbors (African and European) made many choices that have ongoing consequences for their contemporary descendants.
Choices by polities (nation states, Indigenous Nations), and individuals from these communities all shape our modern reality.
Looking at specific Native Nations in what is now Canada, the United States, and Mexico/New Spain,
- identify specific Native political actions/choices and their connections to policies/practices of what is now Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
- State Solid one sentence argument in the introduction
- Organize paragraphs around topic sentences that advance your argument
- Contextualize and analyze quotes from primary and secondary documents, connect to argument
- Incorporate discussion forum material: where possible, use dates, names of relevant people, and places
- Critically compare the readings you are analyzing

Topic: Native Peoples and their new neighbors (African and European) made many choices that have ongoing consequences for their contemporary descendants. Choices by polities (nation states, Indigenous Nations), and individuals from these communities all shape our modern reality. Looking at specific Native Nations in what is now Canada, the United States, and Mexico/New Spain, identify specific Native political actions/choices and their connections to policies/practices of what is now Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Make sure to use one example from Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
To find contemporary information, you may use official tribal web-sites (such as the site for the Chickasaw Nation, https://www.chickasaw.net/ ), and Indian Country Today Media Network (https://newsmaven.io/indiancountrytoday/ ) which covers Native stories from Canada, the United States, and Mexico (including those areas which were part of Mexico during much of your readings, such as Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California, etc.).
Examples of these policies could be Western style education of Native youth, Indian Removal, conversion efforts, and Native community responses to these policies or encroachment, such as migration by a community across a border to another nation state (e.g. most of the Six Nations to Canada following the American Revolution, Brotherton Indians from New England to New York and then Wisconsin, or Kickapoo to Mexico).
For your paper, you must do the following: Make an argument that addresses the above topic. Support your argument with evidence from three of our reading sets chosen from the following list, using at least one of the primary documents in Calloway as a source (included at the end of each chapter):
o Calloway, Collin. First Peoples: A Documentary Survey of American Indian History; chapters 1- 6.
o Coe, Michael. Mexico: From the Olmec to the Aztecs; pp. 89-106.
o Dickason, Olive; McNab, David. Canada’s First Nations: A History of Founding Peoples from Earliest Times; chapters 1-18
You do not need to look elsewhere for other sources to use – stick with those I have assigned, Indian Country Today Media Network, and tribal websites if you choose to use them. Be sure to use parenthetical citations or footnotes and include a bibliography. Structure your paper so that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion (but do not use these as headings). Organize paragraphs around topic sentences that advance your argument. Title your paper but avoid excessive line spaces before and after your title. Number your pages. Your paper should be 3-5 pages in length.
Be sure to have a solid argument: this should be clearly stated in the introduction – it should only be one sentence long. Analyze and quote from the primary or secondary documents: be sure to set up your quotes with appropriate context and follow them with analysis connecting them to your argument.
Incorporate discussion forum material: where possible, use dates, names of relevant people, and places – this is the type of historical specificity that makes the difference between strong and mediocre papers. Critically compare the readings you are analyzing. If you have any questions about your paper, please do not hesitate to contact me.
