The intent of this project is to provide the Larger Theater customer base with a heightened
entertainment experience through the implementation of a smart kiosk / tablet device in each new
recliner seat. Once seated, customers will be able to use the kiosk / tablet to order food and drink
from concessions, pay by credit/debit card, request assistance from staff, play games, and
complete questionnaires/surveys to provide feedback about the movies and the overall
experience. The scope of this project is to implement and install smart kiosks / tablets in the
recliner seats of a sample group of Larger movie theaters. The sample group for this project will
include one Larger Theater in each of the 35 states which currently possess the Larger franchise,
and the 20% of movie seats within said theaters which have been upgraded to recliner seating.
The project is scheduled to begin March 20, 2020 and finish September 20, 2020. The cost of
this project is budgeted at $5,000,000. – NOT FINISHED

Project Charter
Project Title: Tablet Initiative
Project Start Date: March 20, 2020
Projected Finish Date: September 20, 2020
Budget Information: $5,000,000
Project Manager: (Name, e-mail)
Project Objectives: The objectives of this project are as follows:
•
To have a tablet attached to each seat in the theater capable of connecting to the network
and compatible with our Larger Movies app.
•
Each tablet will be connected to a secure arm mount and case to ensure that the tablets
cannot be stolen and can be easily and quietly pulled up and down before, during, and
after a film.
•
The tablets will be locked down so that customers can only interact with our Larger
movie app. The app will be able to show times of upcoming movies and their synopses,
be able to contact staff, order food and drinks, play approved games before a movie, and
at the end of the film, rate the customer experience out of five stars and a comment
section on how we can improve.
Main Project Success Criteria: The success criteria for this project would be to acquire a tablet
that is compatible with our network and Larger movies app. The next success criteria would be
to attach and secure a compatible arm mount to each seat that fits the “quiet” and “flexible”
standard we’ve set. And finally to stay within our allotted budget and time schedule.
Approach: Our approach to this project will be to outsource the arm mount construction and
attachment, to send an RFQ to suppliers to recieve a quote on the tablets and tablet cases with
our specifications in mind, outsource lockdown software for the tablets, and finally to test and
implement in our selected theaters.

Your group comprises the Information Technology Services department of Lager Theaters, a
privately owned regional digital entertainment organization headquartered in Sparks, Maryland.
Lager operates 227 movie theaters, with 734 screens and 152,000 seats, in 35 states. It recently
completed a 2- year project upgrading approximately 20% of its seats to large power recliners in
all but 21 of its theaters (these 21 older theaters will require more extensive renovations – a
separate project).
The Chief Operating Officer of the company recently attended a large expo for the entertainment
and hospitality industry where the latest technical gadgets were on display. On the Monday after
her return, she called your team into her office. She was very excited about all the things she had
seen and had a great idea to improve the customer’s experience at the Lager theaters. She said
she wanted your group to implement some sort of “smart” kiosk / tablet like devices for each of
the new recliner seats within the theaters. Once seated in the recliner, customers would be able to
use the kiosk / tablet to order food and drink from concessions, pay by credit/debit card, request
assistance from staff and perhaps complete questionnaires/surveys to provide feedback about the
movies and the overall experience.
The kiosk / tablets will need to be “rugged / hardened” to stand up to daily use and should also
entertain customers by allowing them to participate in interactive games, trivia, and perhaps
preview upcoming movies / shows. She tells you that the primary purpose of the kiosk / tablet is
to improve the customer experience. She also indicates that market research shows that
customers are likely to spend more at the theater with the increased flexibility and convenience.
Your team thinks this is a great idea, but you have many questions. You want to know if this
should be implemented in all theaters (that have recliners). She says it probably should be piloted
first in a select number of theaters covering various geographical areas of the country. You want
to know if the kiosk / tablets should be portable or stationary; she says I’m not sure, probably
stationary. You want to know if the tablets should accept voice input, typed input, some sort of
touch-screen menu-driven input, or a combination; she says she doesn’t care but it needs to easy
to use. You ask if there would be any extra charge for the entertainment features of the kiosk /
tablets or should it all be free? She says it depends – how much will it cost to do this? You ask if
the kiosk / tablets should have direct internet access and she says she’s not sure.
You have lots of other questions, but she is late for her tee time and says, “Look – I pay you
folks to be the technology experts. I don’t know exactly how all this will work. All I know is that
I want to give Lager customers the best experience possible. Figure out the best solution and put
together a detailed project plan!”
When she leaves, you look at each other and realize that this will be a complex project. You also
realize that your group does not have the all technical expertise to solve all aspects of the project
in-house and will have to procure a portion of the work. Fortunately, you all have excellent
project management skills and are excited about the project. You cannot wait to get started!
