Choose THREE of the ways of knowing from the list below and do the related activities for them throughout the semester. Try them out in your personal lives, in your work with patients (if applicable), in your understanding of your own health, in your understanding of the health of friends and loved one. Contemplate, compare, and contrast how these ways of knowing enhance your understanding of health, healthcare, the body. You will turn this in as a portfolio, so I would expect to see a 3-page commentary for each way of knowing plus a 3-page summary, and, perhaps, pictures, illustrations, newspaper or magazine clippings, a checklist or schedule of your activities, etc. The commentaries will discuss, review and critique your activities, and will discuss how these way of knowing have helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness. Be sure to connect to (and cite) your readings and class lectures and discussions.

Heartful Knowing: Turn in a Poetry Chapbook (series of 10-15 poems on a related subject) about the body, illness, wellness. In the commentary, discuss how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness.

Empathetic Knowing: Interview and/or shadow someone whose body is different than yours (other gender, race, ethnic group, dis/ability, size, etc.) to investigate what it is like to live in their body. In the commentary, discuss who you talked to/shadowed (who, how and when), and how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness.

Aesthetic Knowing: Option 1) Go to an art museum. Ponder different ways bodies are depicted. In the commentary, discuss where you went, when, and how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness. 2) Make a painting or series of paintings depicting health, wellness, and/or illness. In the commentary, discuss how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness.

Ethical Knowing: Consider different medically ethical situations you or someone you know have experienced. In the commentary, discuss the situation, how you responded and/or how you wish you had responded, and discuss how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness.

Critical Knowing: Read news accounts of how different bodies are treated by people in positions of power (e.g., government, police, etc.). Ponder how your own body is treated similarly or differently. In the commentary, review and critique what you have discovered, and discuss how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness.

Social Knowing: Choose one health-related social problem (poverty, marginalization, etc.). Review literature on how this social issue is related to health. In the commentary, synthesize and critique the literature and discuss how this way of knowing has helped you understand the body/health/illness/wellness.
