For this assignment you are being asked to choose a specific risk issue for which you will review the public’s perception of this risk, and develop a communication strategy accordingly.

Your group must first decide on a specific topic to aIDress for this assignment. You have two options:
•    You can choose to develop a communication strategy in light of a crisis issue which has arisen, for example: a food poisoning outbreak, a suspected link between a vaccine and an illness (e.g. similar to the MMR scare), a flu epidemic, a water supply contamination event, etc.
OR
•    You can develop a communication strategy for a pre-planned campaign, for example: risky driving behaviour, alcohol intake during pregnancy, childhood obesity, etc.
Based on the specific risk issue your group chooses, you will then have two tasks to complete: a group presentation and an individual essay.

The essay:

Based on your chosen topic, you are asked to complete an essay which investigates the public perception of your chosen risk topic. Elaborate on the psychological, social, and environmental factors which are influencing public perception of this risk. You should draw on the wider risk perception literature and theory to inform this essay.

This essay should be informed by a literature review on peer-reviewed articles investigating public perception of the risk your group has chosen to develop a communication strategy for.

This is an individual essay to be undertaken by each student separately.
