An Interpretation of “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell
When looked at from the surface, Trifles, the one-act-play by Susan Glaspell seems to
focus on the death of a husband who is oppressive to his wife at their farm located at the
Midwest. However, a keen look reveals that the behaviors of the main women characters; Mrs.
Peters, Mrs. Hale, and Mrs. Wright resemble those of the Fates in Greek Mythology. The author
has given attention to the three women in a manner that is similar to stories from Three Sisters
that depict how they “control the fate of men” (Russell 88-90).
Mrs. Hale is compared to Clotho the Spinner who “spins the thread of life ” (Russell 8890). Mrs. Hale is seen to be defending Mrs. Wright as she suggests that she is not the only one
responsible for the death of Mr. Wright. Her use of broken sentence, “when they was slipping
the rope under his neck”, depicts that the three women have a motive to control the outcome
of the investigation of Mr. Wright’s death (Glaspell). Mrs. Hale connects the death of Mr.
Wright to the killing of the bird which he killed as a resemblance to kill the freedom that Mrs.
Wright had. She uses Mrs. Wright’s quilt making style, she “knots it” instead of “quilts it”, to
symbolize how she killed her husband. Mrs. Hale comes out as the one spins the threat of life
as she defends Mrs. Wright.
Mrs. Peters personifies Lachesis the Disposer of Lots in the play the Three Sisters. The
actions and reactions of Mrs. Peters determine the viability of the thread spun by Mrs. Hale. In

both cases “they must abandon objectivity and move towards subjectivity” (Russell 88-90).
Mrs. Peters is initially objective as she says “the law is the law” and “I don’t think we ought to
touch things” to mean that the person who killed Mr. Wright will be found by following the
law (Glaspell). However, she starts to be subjective as soon as she sees the dead canary which
seems to have been killed by someone. Mrs. Peters changes from being objective to subjective
as decides to hide the dead bad so that the men “do not find something to make the story about”
(Glaspell). Essentially, instead of allowing the procedure to be followed she subjectively
defends Mrs. Wright by hiding the evidence.
Mrs. Wright represents Atropos the Cutter of the Thread. Mr. Hales uses the term “rocking
back and forth” which symbolically refers to the sound made by scissors to refer connect
Atropos to Mrs. Wright. Mrs. Peters further says, “Why, this isn’t her scissors” further connects
Mrs. Wright to Atropos. The dead bird which is found in her sewing box takes the place of the
scissors and is a representation of her fate (Russell 88-90). Mrs. Wright who is in prison is not
present at the stage but portrays a spiritual presence there. Mrs. Wright denies knowing who
killed her husband despite the fact that she was asleep and “didn’t wake” beside her. She
acknowledges that her husband “died of a rope around his neck” but denies killing him
(Glaspell). “Her involvement with the rope of death” is similar to severing the thread of life.
She was justified to deny the death of her husband because she was not responsible for the
many things that eventually led to death.
The three women all have a role in the story. Mrs. Hales describes the circumstances, Mrs.
Peters is responsible for weighing the evidence and determining the direction that justice takes
and Mrs. Wright carries out the verdict (Russell 88-90). The author has made use of the Three

Sisters and the Fates to showcase that oppression of men on women in her drama, Trifles. The
drama focuses on inequality that women face against men and she uses three women to equal
one man in the play.

Simply changing a word or two in the source sentence is not sufficient: you must
completely restate the ideas from the source in your own words.
Along with your paper, turn in five (5) source pages from any of your sources,
highlighted to show where you got the information on that page that you used in your paper.
They can be five pages from one source, or one page from each of five sources, two pages from
one source, etc., as long as you actually used info from each page in your paper, and cited the
source. Make sure the source of each page is visible on each source page don’t leave me
guessing where the page came from. I cannot grade your paper without these pages.
You may not use a standard, general-information encyclopedia as a source.
Wikipedia is unreliable and should not be used, except perhaps as a background source
(for finding out your author’s nationality, famous works, etc) to get you started on your
research
A paper that does not use MLA style for source citation and “works cited” page
form will receive a grade of zero.
A paper that is substantially plagiarized from the source materials or from another
paper will receive a grade of zero.
GRADE: Your papers will be graded on 1) writing ability, 2) strength and use of
research, 3) incorporation of source material into your text, and 4) correct use of MLA
format. All of these areas must be strong in order for the paper to receive a strong grade.
You will receive a grade for each of these four areas, and the lowest of the four grades is
your grade for the paper.

Literary Biography; JSTOR-Arts and Sciences; Twayne Authors Series; Gale Literary
Sources; Literature Criticism Online; Literature Resource Center; Litfinder; etc.
Pick one of the following authors. The first half of your paper should be biography of the
author. For the second half, find literary criticism of one of the author’s works, and report
on what those critics say about the work.
