1) DISCUSSION POST

What role do your emotions serve? And is it okay to express them in the workplace? A salesperson with intense passion can convince someone to make a purchase. On the other hand, an angry manager can prompt an unfair review. In this discussion, you are asked to help your team to understand and manage their emotions in the workplace. To get started, review the following article: Like It or Not, Emotions Will Drive the Decisions You Make Today.

Assume that you are a team leader, and your team is under a deadline to get a lot done. You have noticed that some of your team members tend to get overwhelmed and make emotional decisions. Other team members seem to thrive in those situations and are motivated by the deadline.

Based on this article, make a list of things you can do as a manager to help your team to understand and manage their emotions so they all can be productive. For instance, what could you teach them about emotions? How would you pair people to work together? What would help them to learn about their emotions so they can be more productive in the workplace?

2) PEER REVIEW #1 ( Bria)

Our emotions drive our decisions. In the article, it spoke about how our emotions have action potential. This can sometimes be seen as anxiety because a project is upcoming and it stresses some people out. On the other hand, this can cause anxiety for someone until the project is completed. This serves as motion action. As a team leader, to help my team understand their emotions, I would have a team meeting so we can all stop and evaluate our thoughts. This is a good step in alleviating anxiety. We can recognize how each person feels, who is good at what task, and assign roles/tasks from there. I would assign 2 people per task. I would have paired an overwhelmed worker with a more patient deadline oriented worker in the hopes that the overwhelmed worker would become more grounded in the fact that we have a deadline to hit. I would teach the team first, what our emotions are and how they’re triggered (i.e. triggered in our brains then our nervous system responds by creating those feelings and thoughts.) Then I would inform them of the impact our emotions have on our decision making. I would let them know the reward for hitting the deadline and ensure that there is no reason to feel stressed nor overwhelmed because we are all in this together to reach our goal.

3) PEER REVIEW #2(PATRICIA)

Hello fellow classmates,

After reading the article and the webtext this week, I found it very interesting how pure emotion can influence our decision process and how we operate as a whole. The article proceeded to talk about how fear can limit success and I see that as the reason that maybe my team is failing or nervous to start the project. I think in this particular example, I think that I would pair some of the ones who are used to handling this kind of stress in completing an assignment with some of the more nervous ones. I think that pairing them up would help the ones already prepared to encourage others to be more motivated to get the task done. In doing this I would hope to teach them that emotions can influence success and fear can definitely limit how successful you will be. Hopefully, with the help of the confidence of the others in the group, the others in the group will replace some of the fear of failure with excitement for the new chapter. I think in order to do this calling a company meeting with an understandable PowerPoint explaining how emotions and success are tied together may also help influence them to reach the deadline on time/
