What is required:  Three 18 page APA style papers (research focused).  What does that mean?   Take a previous paper, ensure that it meets the APA standards.  I will assume that the paper may have been written from a generalized standpoint (i.e. history, general information).  Great that can be the first portion of the paper.  Now you have to evaluate the subject matter of the paper topic and determine how you can add a research component.  What does that mean and how do I do that?   EX. – Law Enforcement; let’s say that your initial paper was written on ‘The History of Policing and How It Has Impacted Current Societal Relations”.  Develop a hypothesis statement that relates to the majority of the previous research and prove your stance.  This is a possible hypothesis that I would use on a paper with this topic= Throughout history there has been a direct causal relationship between policing and politics, where police were and still are used as a tool of social control by politicians.    *so I made an affirmative statement – I have to now find secondary research to prove my assertion that police were – during the political era a tool used by politicians and bring that forward to current day “Law and Order” political slogans that are used to instill fear and expand police power and discretion.    *remember your hypothesis has a dependent and an independent variable!   2.    If I want to use a class like Youth Gangs or Women in Criminal Justice:         a.   Follow the same steps as the law enforcement example.  One trick that may work for you               is to take the title of your paper and turn it into a question or a statement:         Example # 1 Title = The History of Youth Gangs in America Hypothesis = “Youth Gang memberships in America Has Increased Because of Net Widening and The Deterioration of the Family”. Is the family deteriorating because of police targeting, hot spot policing in certain communities?  This can also be related to corrections – incarceration rates, juvenile detention, lack of services and training, high school dropout rate, etc. This could be used for your LAW ENFORCEMENT or CORRECTIONS PAPER   Example# 2 Title = Women Suffrage Movement Hypothesis = The Women Suffrage Movement in The United States resulted in passage of the 19th Amendment, however women became the targets of oppressive, discriminatory tactics by political opponents. This could be used as the COURTS PAPER!   Minimum 8 references (use journals and books – limit web sites)   I am hopeful that you all find this information/examples beneficial; reach out if we need to set up one on one time.
