FIRST PAPER TOPIC

1. Write a five-page essay (roughly 1,250 words) paper on the subject below. The papers are due by class time Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

2. Late papers will be marked down one grade (if push comes to shove, aim not to get it right but to get it written). Papers more than a week late will receive a grade of F.  Fight the anxiety to be perfect; an on time something is always better than a late nothing.

3. As recidivists will know, I am a stickler for a clear first paragraph ending in a clear thesis. I am not only willing to look at drafts of the first paragraph, but I encourage you to forward them to me. I will look at them and respond up until 48 hours before the paper is due.

SUBJECT:

Aristotle draws out some of the core premises and core implications of the Greek republican tradition and tries to offer a republican picture cleansed of some of the problems and tensions within actual Greek states like Athens and Sparta.  Write a paper that develops the nature of Aristotle’s republic.  Take into account the political alternatives that it is not.  Take into account as well the fact that Aristotle thinks that a certain kind of person is needed in his republic who is equipped with certain virtues—virtues beyond the warrior virtues of the Homeric tradition.  Put this citizen virtue in the perspective of Aristotle’s larger view of the nature of human virtue and excellence.  Pay attention to the tensions and even contradictions in Aristotle’s ideal republic and in the relation between the ideal citizen and the ideal human being.
