Chapter 20 Assignment

Instructions: This chapter discusses the role of our brain in language use.

Please read Chapter 20 and answer the following questions:

• What do we know about the interaction between the brain and social cognition? How might an understanding of these components help you as a counselor?

• Why is an understanding of this interaction particularly relevant for your current career choice (this question will be specific to you and may vary depending on the Option you are currently in)?

• Discuss how emotions can be considered to be asymmetrical?

• Watch the video linked below. How does the video relate to what you learned in this chapter? What are the implications of technology that allows us to read our own (and maybe others) emotions?  How might this kind of technology influence our future careers?

Discussion Question:

How have you experienced the link between emotions and the social brain as discussed in the textbook? Why do you think it is difficult to discuss emotions in people without discussing cognition and the impact of our social environment?  Why do you think emotions were one of the first areas of interest to those studying the brain?
