In American society, racial discrimination has brought a great numbers of negative
influence on African American. One of the discrimination reflected directly on employment.
There’s a real experience from an 36-year-old African American women, Nisa. She says: “I
am finding it difficult to find a job as well, despite having a degree. I really don’t know what
to do as I send application after application to employers and do not get a response, if I do get
a response it is to tell me that I was ‘unsuccessful’.” Her difficulties on finding jobs gives her
feeling that “Is this soft genocide, for some of us blacks?” It is a truth that colored people has
less opportunities to be hired. They were also paid less when they are employed compared to white people. It will impede colored people to get rid of their poor life. At the
same time, the racial wealth gap would be hard to eliminated. The social phenomenon is
occurring because of the mass incarceration on majorities. Another reason is that the
education level for black people is lower than white people. The racial problem has happened since the minorities entered into America. It lasted so long that some white men
may take it normally or even do not willing to talk about this sensitive topic because
their lives are unrelated to those minorities. That does not means that the problem does
not exist or does not in urgency. Minorities are a part of U.S. citizens, they occupied 40%
of population. Thus, a part of labor force to American economy is contributed by them.
Job discrimination is harming minorities as they will easily crime when they did not
have opportunities to earn a living through a legal way. The racial wealth gap caused by
job discrimination is also harmful for the overall U.S. economy. On the other hand, some
people might say, the discrimination has declined compared to last century. While, a
writer, Erick Sherman, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times
Magazine, Newsweek, etc. holds that “Hiring discrimination against Blacks hasn’t
changed in the last 25 years. Latinos have seen only a moderate drop in discrimination
against them.” based on “review of multiple studies, by researchers at Northwestern, in
Chicago; Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the Institute of Social Research in
Oslo, Norway”. It authoritatively provides evidence that job discrimination did not decline remarkably with the support of some famous universities.
One of the reason for racial job discrimination is the mass incarceration.

Solitary confinement on mental illness prisoners
introduction:
In U.S prison, the solitary confinement for mental illness prisoners bring a large number
of negative consequences on them. The problem exists decades ago and it’s still under
controversial discussion because solitary confinement is still frequently used on mental
illness prisoners. Solitary confinement basically is putting the prisoners into one separate cell individually. He can’t have contact with anyone, he will stay in his cell alone
every day. Some of the mentally ill prisoners are having a psychological problem before
they get into jail. Putting them in solitary confinement and segregating them forever
will further develop their mental illness. Prisoners who are put in the solitary confinement have higher chance to hurt themselves and perform abnormal behavior. It will
damage both the prisoners’ mental and physical health. Imagine prisoners being put in a
small dark cell alone for 22-24 hours per day. What if they are in the cell for 3 months?
The negative consequences for the prisoners in solitary are numerous. This issue is occurring due to lack of psychological treatment and psychological therapists in prison for
the prisoners. Another reason is the potential threat of mental illness prisoners for prisoners without mental illness. Mental illness prisoner is a small portions of prisoners
overall; the public often ignores their health condition of them because they are prisoners. This doesn’t mean they can be treated in any way. They also have human rights like
every other else. Solitary confinement is harming mental illness prisoners’ health and
human rights right now, they are having serious mental disorder in the cell which may
cause their death.
cause1
One of the reasons for putting mental illness prisoners into solitary confinement is
because of their potential threat for the guards and other prisoners. Some of the
mental illness prisoners may conduct violence and put other prisoners in danger.
However, this kind of situation is kind of rare compared to other cases. From decades ago to present, the main purpose of solitary confinement is to punish prisoners.
The punishment in the solitary confinement is cruel and without humanity. It may
cause the physical damage they may conduct on their own bodies and the mental
impact is also hard to ignore. Although there are lots of negative aspects of solitary
confinement, it is still in use for the criminal justice system. David Polizzi has his
opinion towards the usage of solitary confinement “As was observed above, the
practice of solitary confinement was not challenged as a possible violation of Eighth
Amendment protections until it stopped being viewed as a legitimate rehabilitative
strategy.”(6) Solitary confinement cannot be banned due to it does not have a recognizable violation on any amendment or law. That is why it is still present for punishing the prisoners. Prisoners who behave abnormal or don’t obey the guards maybe
put into solitary confinement. Using solitary confinement to punish the prisoners and
this is a disaster for mental illness prisoners. Mental illness prisoners will behave abnormally due to their illness. “They sometimes can’t control themselves and harm
themselves. In 1303 of these incarcerations there were 2182 acts of self-harm; in 89
incarcerations there were 103 acts of potentially fatal self-harm. The most common
methods of self-harm were laceration (34%), ligature (28%), swallowing a foreign
body (15%), and overdose (14%). In addition, 15% of acts of self-harm were categorized as “other” (e.g., head banging and setting self or cell on fire) and 6% of inci-

dents involved multiple methods” (Kaba 4). This was a data analysis of New York inmates in solitary confinement during 2011-2013.The percentages of different selfharming methods are quite shocking. It’s not a number that the criminal system
should ignore. What does the prison do to the inmates if they can’t behave normally?
Isolate them and throw them to solitary confinement! This is the current treatment to
them in prison.
cause2
There is a lack of medical treatment toward mental illness prisoners in prison. According to Haney Craig, a psychologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
“More recent studies also identified a wide range of adverse psychological reactions
that frequently occur in solitary confinement. The specific symptoms include stressrelated reactions (such as decreased appetite, trembling hands, sweating palms,
heart palpitations, and a sense of impending emotional breakdown); sleep disturbances (including nightmares and sleeplessness);” (4) Mental illness prisoners are
having lots of mental disorders but not having enough medical treatment on their illness. Instead, the prison is trying to further develop their illness. There are not
enough psychological therapists for them. The prison is more willing to lock them up
than treat them with proper treatment. According to Sam Dolnick, “Roth paints a devastating portrait of lives wrecked — or ended — in prisons, stories of sick people
who never got the treatment they needed outside, and certainly didn’t receive it on
the inside either” (2). Tragically, that’s the fact of the current situation. In the prison,
no one cares about the treatment for mental illness group and most of them are not
allowed to be treated outside. Then the medical treatment for them from the prison
and criminal justice system is solitary confinement.
