Working in Prisons Homework Help

The prison population in the country has been voted as the highest in the world, with a record 756 per every 100,000 people of the national population being incarcerated in various prisons. This therefore means that close to 0.8 percent American adults live in incarcerate confinements where their care is maintained at the expense of the tax payers. It has been proved that holding people in incarcerated prisons is cost effective to the tax payer than sentencing them for death penalties. However, critically thinking, is it the best policy for the American taxpayer to pay for the upkeep of criminals in state confinements? This leads one tom ask him or herself why the prisoners, who are ideally the social misfits given the preferential treatment as citizens by giving them a free accommodation, a free meal as well as free medical care and clothing?. Isn’t doing this a way of showing the society that crime is good and that it pays? These questions have made a good number of people to assert that prisoners should be earn their own upkeep and the million of dollars spent on their upkeep should be invested elsewhere for the benefit of the society and the country.

According to Clear, George and Reisig, (213), it takes the American tax payer approximately $22,650, to keep one inmate in the prison annually or $62.05 per day, with some states having a high budget of up to $ 150. (based on 2009 results) The economic benefit of this amount can be seen differently, the leading view being the fact that if the prisoner was left in the society, he or she would have caused more mayhem hence disrupting the needed societal peace. This would thus jeopardize the ability of people to work hence justifying the use of this huge amount in our prisons. Beside this, if the people would have been subjected to other forms of punishment such as capital punishment, it would have cost the taxpayers an even higher amount of money.
