Purpose: To examine two perspectives on the Vietnamese-American war: O’Brien, Tim. The Things They Carried.  New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1990. Bao Ninh. The Sorrow of War. New York: Riverhead, 1996.   Process: Review your notes and discussions from reading these books and select aspects of the two books to compare.    For example, you might want to compare: – How are these two accounts similar? How do they differ? – How each author views Americans and Vietnamese? – How each feels about the war and how the war has affected their lives and the lives of their friends and loved ones? – How does each portray the role of women? – What each work reveals about the larger context of the war? – The structure, order, and writing styles of each book Tie your essay together with a thesis statement, which makes an assessment of the two books.   Product: A 800-1000 word paper that uses internal citation and includes a Works Cited list.
