Summary of My Daughter, Malala
“My Daughter, Malala” is a video of speech from Ziauddin Yousafzai. The
speaker took his daughter as an example to encourage people who live in a patriarchal
and tribal societies to not teach the obedience to their girls any more. For example, “ I
encouraged her to sit with me when my friends used to come. I encouraged her to go
with me to different meetings” (10:16). The speaker want to change the current
condition in the poor countries because the patriarchal society will affect not only
women, but also men. Women have no right and they need to be obedient anytime.
Men need to do everything for their family to keep the honor. For example, “ So this
brother, he sacrifices the joys of his life and the happiness of his sisters at the altar of
so-called honor” (03:44).
The speaker used first person and third person. The choice of subjects is depend
on the key concept and genre. The use of subjects is very important for the text’s
genre because the genre is a video of a speech which needs to take a lot of examples
to support his ideas and make his idea more clear. In this speech, the speaker appeals
that people need to change the patriarchal society, so he used many examples from
himself, his daughter and others to support his opinion. When he discussed his own
story to encourage people, he used the first person. For example, “ but I’m one of the
few fathers who is known by his daughter, and I am proud of it” (00:13). When he
discussed the story which happened on others, he used the third person. For example,
“ and she was given the national youth peace prize, and she became a very famous,
very popular young girl of her country” (00:35).
To show the problem, “ My Daughter, Malala” and “ The Best Way We Could
Do” used the same time tenses but in a different way. A speech should use all
narrations, so in this speech, speaker used a lot of present simple to describe the
current conditions of the society and the present past to describe what happened on his
daughter in this revolution. For example, “ Malala started her campaign for education
and stood for her rights in 2007” (00:35). However, in the comics “ the Best We
Could Do”, the author used both of dialogues and narrations. Therefore, the author
used the present simple in what people say and what happen currently. For example,
“Hello, Lan! It’s your mother”(p. 25). Moreover, the author used the present past in
some narrations what happened in the past. For example, “ My other sister, Bich, was
in college” (p. 26).
