Students Matter, Vergara v. California Case Summary   Vergara Resources: Going back a number of years, certain advocacy groups, scholars, and politicians have pushed against the idea of tenure for K-12 teachers, while unions and others have defended it. The most famous example of this occurred in California, with the case of Vergara v. California–we have provided below a series of readings about that case.  We also provide a piece from the conservative Hoover Institution, written by a prominent education policy “player.”  In recent years, there has not been much in the way of “neutral” writing on this subject so most of what you get is articles from one advocacy group or another. While the Vergara litigation ended, as you will read, other efforts have been mounted around the country in various states to attempt to water down or eliminate teacher tenure and, even more so, to weaken the power of unions.   The final decision in the Vergara case was handed down in 2016.  In the last 5 years, there have been several prominent instances of educator labor protests over various issues, as well as US Supreme Court decisions affecting teacher unions.  Do the research and identify at least one example of teacher grievances/protests or one US Supreme Court case and explain what happened; indicate what you think the significance of the event was, and share your perspective on whether you think the event–the teacher protests or the Court decisions–has had or will have positive or negative ramifications for our education system.
