Ozturk 1
Real Side of The Lies
Elizabeth Holmes was a 19-year-old Stanford dropout that founded Theranos, a company
that used blood testing technology that claimed to conduct more than 1000 blood tests (Ho, p.3).
This was praised as a revolutionary development in the tech world and for the healthcare system
as it would help save lives (Dolan, p.1708). Holmes’ company was estimated to be worth $9
billion, after various incisors in Silicon Valley provided funding for the company, that Holmes
promised would make millions of dollars annually. The deception of Holmes also included the
media, which reported highly on the progress of Theranos and Holmes. This deception led to
Holmes being charged with Fraud, and was penalized, not allowed to hold any public office for
10 years, and agreed to refund the invested money to the investors. The case of Holmes is still
active despite the $500,000 penalty; she still faces the possibility of being jailed once her case is
concluded by the FBI. The Elizabeth Holmes case raises the question of the role of deception in
the growth of business and where the line of business deception should be drawn.
Various large companies and their CEOs and founders have previously been accused of
deception, including Mark Zuckerberg regarding Facebook privacy control, Elon musk, and
Volkswagen (Bilton). In these lies, including Elizabeth Holmes, the main issue being analyzed
was how much the media, the public, and investors are gullible to go along with whatever the
business moguls and founders state in public. The deception in this case is more important than
the discovery of the deception. The main question I believe with Holmes’ case was how did the
lie get past so many individuals within and outside the company. The lack of research into
companies by the media and the much trust and idolizing placed on these founders could have
Ozturk 2
played a major role in the perpetuation of the deceit for years. The role of deceit from large
corporations as evident with Holmes and Musk is the role it plays in the continued growth of the
business. However, where is the line drawn to stop the deceit to the public?
In the primary article, Holmes is referred to as having sociopathic tendencies which include a
lack of conscience of one’s actions hurting people and the pathological lies that start small and
grow into a big lie (Bilton). I agree with the writer on this suggestion based on how the Holmes
case played out in the media. Despite being arrested and charged with Fraud, Holmes still
legitimized her fraud, claiming that she was close to completing her startup blood testing
technology just before she was accused of deceit. Holmes created an illusion of a company that
lured investors to give her millions of dollars, by presenting a trustworthy corporate image and
promising fast-tracked growth of the company. However, what role do investors have in
legitimizing an idea or a startup before investing millions of dollars into the idea? Corporate
deceit in Holmes’s case included the public, media, and stakeholders of the company, despite the
years that Theranos was in operation with the media publicizing the company and the founder,
Holmes. For Holmes, the sociopathic traits could be effectively used to describe her based on her
conduct and the many lies she told from a young age that resulted in one of the biggest fraud
cases in America.
Deception has been evident with many large companies in the world, which has contributed to
protecting these companies from losing customers and users including Tesla and Facebook. For
Holmes and Theranos however, the case was different, as the lies risked the lives of many
Americans that relied on the blood test technology. The deception from Holmes included a team
of lawyers and bullying tactics among employees that prevented the deceit from being publicized
at an early stage of the company’s foundation (Dolan, p.1708). Thus, corporate deception plays a
Ozturk 3
role in company growth, but the line should be drawn when the lies risk the lives of the public
and investors’ funds. Lastly, this article shows the importance of research and the role that the
media plays in influencing the corporate world and Silicon Valley.
