HLTH 3611 Professional Growth Instructions Assignment 1: Seminar 5 Quality Practice Environments
Purpose
High quality practice environments produce better client outcomes and more satisfied patients and staff. One way in which quality improvement in a work environment can be enhanced is by creating a culture of patient safety. Review the topic “Quality Care and Patient Safety” in Chapter 37 of your text and using the safety competencies identified in Box 11-11 (p. 168) and reflect on your past professional experiences to identify situations where a client’s safety may have been compromised. The assignment ties back to the course and your learning through the following learning objectives:
• Be aware of how inquiry is applied to nursing practice.
• Understand and apply the characteristics of a critical thinker and the components of critical thinking.
• Find and critically analyze nursing knowledge from text-based sources. • Synthesize health-related knowledge and demonstrate an understanding of its applicability to nursing practice.
• Explain the relationship between nursing leadership and healthy practice environments, client safety and quality client care outcomes.
• Differentiate the types of nursing care delivery models in practice environments.
• Describe the concept of quality in nursing practice.

1. Case scenario. Drawing on your past professional experience, compose a 5-8 sentence long case in which at least two of the six core competency domains for a nursing service that you provided were compromised (see your course text Box 11-11 for Domain 1 of the Safety Competencies, p. 168). A case scenario for the purposes of this assignment is: A research method involving an examination of a particular case to gain a better understanding of a subject or process. The case scenario should be presented in an efficient, narrative form using full sentences. Use a chronological approach with a beginning, middle, and an end. Incorporating direct quotes is a great way to tell your or your client’s own story. As case studies vary widely in terms of style, tone and format, there is no one way to write the case scenario for this assignment. You will want to review the questions below before creating the case scenario so that you can include information that allows you to answer them.
Ensure that at least two safety competencies are identified.

2. Thresholds. Identify at least one threshold for the two competencies you identified in Question 1.
• When you identify thresholds you are identifying the point at which standards of care are met. This is a quantitative measurement, e.g., it is a measure that can be counted or calculated in some way. A resource must be used that sets out the measurement.
3. Changes to promote patient safety.
a. Describe one important change for each of the safety competencies identified in Question 1 that could be made to promote patient safety.
