MY TOPIC IS PRINCE (THE MUSIC ARTIST)  1) Revise your introduction and thesis and start writing your essay with three headings (Longevity, Ubiquity, and Distinct) and with supporting paragraphs. 2) Before you submit, You must revise your draft based on the instructor’s feedback and the feedback you received from your classmate from your Thesis discussion post. Essay Due Dates, Guidelines, and Format Essay Type: Critical Analysis   ESSAY LENGTH: 5 pages min. of text (you must have the section headings: Longevity, Ubiquity, and Distinction), and include an image on the 6th page (image should relate to your subject and Pop Culture), and at the end include a Works Cited page for a total of 7 pages. The essay must conform to MLA 8 format. (Note on image: The image should be small in file size – less than 500K and take no more than 1/2 of a page. Try using this free online Adobe Photo Editor  (Links to an external site.)  to reduce the image size. Save your image as a Jpeg and insert it into the 6th page of your essay. You must include a correct MLA citation for the image.)   Articles/Sources: The paper needs to have at least 4 outside sources to support your ideas. At least one article needs to be peer-reviewed from an academic journal. Also, at least one source needs to be a video: a direct quote from a video such as an interview found on YouTube or a film or documentary. No more than 20% of your total word count should be direct quotes or paraphrased. All citations must have proper MLA in-text citations. It is acceptable to use websites like Bing or Google to search for articles, but at least ONE of your articles must be a peer-reviewed article from an academic journal that is found on the SLCC library’s databases. Articles from Biography.com, Wikipedia, or Encylopedia, or Dictionary websites are NOT allowed. ** While you will provide some information about your Pop Culture subject, this is not a biography about their career or lives. You are writing a critical analysis of their impact on Pop Culture/American culture and specifically, address the 3 pop culture criteria (see Pop Culture presentation).   Your Research Paper should have a structure that reflects: I.) Introduction Write a polished introduction with a thesis that makes a specific claim. Your thesis should answer this research question: What are your subject’s distinguishing moments or accomplishments that classify your subject firmly in Pop Culture or as a Pop Culture icon and how have they influenced American Culture? Step 1: Formulate a research question to your Thesis Statement Come up with a research question that you want to answer, or extract the question from your assignment prompt. Example: What were the main factors that contributed to Elvis Presley’s popularity and status as a pop culture icon and how did he influence American Culture?   Step 2: Find an answer and take a position After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage, it can be simple, and it should guide the process of researching and writing. Example: Elvis’s celebrated career, his humble beginnings, his marriage to Priscilla, and his tragic death, have all contributed to the mythology and public fascination of Elvis. Elvis was the “King of Rock n’ Roll,” a Pop Culture icon, and a legend in the history of recorded music.   Step 3: Support your answer with reasoning and evidence This is the research process! The answer to your question is likely to change as you discover more evidence and sources. As you write the paper, keep developing and refining your thesis statement. The final thesis statement states the topic and makes a claim about the topic in 3-4 sentences: EXAMPLE: Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues, and gospel, Elvis was one of the best-selling solo artists in the history of recorded music, with estimated record sales of around 600 million units worldwide. In his final years, the public saw an older Elvis Presley with mutton-chopped sideburns, a fuller-face, singing in Vegas, and wearing a high-collared white jumpsuit resplendent with red, blue, and gold bangles. Prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate, just 42 years of age. His celebrated career, his life, his marriage to Priscilla, and his tragic death, have all contributed to the mythology and public fascination of Elvis. Elvis was the “King of Rock n’ Roll,” a Pop Culture icon, and a legend in the history of recorded music. The best thesis statements are concise, debatable, and coherent. Concise A good essay or research paper builds up to a central argument. Your reader wants to know what that argument is and how you will make it – your thesis statement should tell them in a sentence or two. Debatable A thesis statement is not a simple statement of fact that your reader will easily accept. A good thesis statement is a claim that requires further evidence, analysis or argument to back it up – your audience needs a reason to keep reading! Particularly in an argumentative paper, if you can imagine someone questioning or disagreeing with your statement, that’s a sign of its strength. Coherent Your thesis statement might have several parts, but they should all add up to a coherent whole, and it should clearly relate to the rest of your paper. Make sure that the main points of your thesis statement appear in your section headings or topic sentences.   II.) The body of your Essay: You must have three sections with subheadings in your essay that reflect the three Pop Culture criteria: Longevity, Ubiquitous, and Distinction. In each section, you should have supporting paragraphs with analysis, and evidence (examples, and direct quotes). You should present comprehensive evidence and examples in all three areas. You should use direct quotes from your articles and cite them correctly in MLA 8 format.   III.) Conclusion: You should briefly restate your thesis and highlight your subject’s Pop culture distinction that supports your claim in your thesis.
