1. Read through the week 2 discussion board and find a mission statement analysis that you DIDN’T completely agree with. Report what it is and why you think the analysis of the statement is a bit off track.
2. I once had the chance to participate with Thiagi (a very prominent management professor from the Univ. of Indiana whose real name would run 52 letters long) on a project he did for top managment at Mastercard. They were having a problem with Mission and asked him to come up with a way for them to focus on what’s important. As a group experiment, he first asked them to reduce the mission statement to 16 words or less (they came up with Mastercard is a driving force at the heart of commerce enabling global transactions and speeding payments ), then he had them reduce it to no more than 8 words (driving force enabling global transactions and speeding payments ), then 4 words (global transactions/speeding payments ), then 2 words (global payments ). At that point, everyone was crystal clear about what made this company tick. They paid Thiagi $20k for the 2 hour session by the way; talk about speeding payments
I want you to do the same thing with any company private or nonprofit (but we’ll only take it down to 4 words). Take the mission and reduce it to 16, 8, and then 4 words. Write the transformation or each mission statement within your post. You will find that you are able to focus on mission in a very different way after you’ve done this.

1) Plan Parenthood is an nonprofit organization that help people control their sexual reproductive lifestyle through education, contraceptives and even abortion. The only analysis that I have feelings about is the fact that they help teenagers. As a parent I would feel indifferently if my teenage adolescent is making decisions to have an abortions in which I’m not aware about because of how it will affect her body and emotions. What if the teenagers are repeat abortions offenders and was not truly receptive in taking preventative measure as a parent this would raise a concern for me.
2)Doctors without Borders mission statement:
Médecins Sans Frontières provides assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict. They do so irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions.
Médecins Sans Frontières observes neutrality and impartiality in the name of universal medical ethics and the right to humanitarian assistance and claims full and unhindered freedom in the exercise of its functions.
Members undertake to respect their professional code of ethics and to maintain complete independence from all political, economic, or religious powers.
As volunteers, members understand the risks and dangers of the missions they carry out and make no claim for themselves or their assigns for any form of compensation other than that which the association might be able to afford them.
The people they serve are the populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict .
Reduce at 16 words: Help those victims who are in distress from natural/man-made disaster and victims of arm conflicts.
Reduce at 8 words: Provides assistance for those who are in distress.
Reduce at 4 words: Distress victims receives help.

I think the analysis for Doctors Without Borders was a bit confusing. I think this is due to the fact that the mission statement is not easy to target on the organizations web site. I visited the site, and under charter, it states, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a private international association. The association is made up mainly of doctors and health sector workers and is also open to all other professions which might help in achieving its aims. Then, there is a list of principles that they aim to follow. I think the added principles make it tricky to drill down on the specific points that the group is trying to achieve. With that said, I feel like the analysis could have focused on the main mission statement as a whole rather than adding each principle.
Here is the mission statement for Zoetis:
We build on a six decade history and singular focus on animal health to bring customers quality products, services and a commitment to their businesses.
16 words: Six decade history focus on animal health bring quality products services and commitment to their businesses
8 words: animal health quality products and services to businesses
4 words: animal health products/services
