1. Explain: Before answering this question, look up your State’s size in acres and compare it to the overall size of the United States. Share with us your results. Then consider the amount of land distributed/seized/occupied by whites vs non-whites during this time period. Reflect on this disparity and how it impacts the patterns of ownership today. As you consider this, reflect on the disparate impact of the Homestead Act, particularly how it impacted white settlers, women, and non-whites: Chinese, African American, Natives, and Hispanics. 2. Look up the names of the Native tribe(s) in your respective state. Share with us the tribal name and location/size of reservation, then turn to p. 506 Map 18.3, and answer the following question: how did government policy regarding Indians shift over the course of this period? In addition, draw on reservation policies discussed on p. 509 in ‘Interpreting the Visual Past’. How did these policies benefit the United States government?

4. As you prepare to critique the following cartoon titled, “The Anti-Chinese Wall” by Friedrich Graetz (1882), reflect in your answer the experiences and legal battles Chinese immigrants faced in the United States, both American and non-American.
