What is BLAST?
BLAST is an acronym for Basic Local Alignment Search Tool and refers to a suite of programs used to
generate alignments between a nucleotide or protein sequence, referred to as a “query” and nucleotide
or protein sequences within a database, referred to as “subject” sequences.
In this exercise, you will be working to identify Coronavirus related sequences, including where they
were isolated.
Coronavirus DNA and protein sequences are listed below in what is called FASTA format.
In bioinformatics, the FASTA format is a text-based format for representing either nucleotide
sequences or amino acid sequences, in which nucleotides or amino acids are represented using singleletter codes. They are usually shown with numbers preceding the letters on the left.
It is your task to identify the provided sequences using Nuleotide BLAST (DNA) and Protein BLAST
(protein).
