Dear Inhabitants of Kepler: Letter to Extraterrestrial
Beings Project Presentation (50 points)
Directions: The National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) has selected you to
communicate via letter to the 10,000 extraterrestrial
inhabitants of the newly discovered planet Kepler.
Kepler was recently discovered during U.S. space
exploration and because of its similarity to earth’s
atmosphere is deemed as potentially habitable for people
from earth.
Specifically, in preparation for its next visit to Kepler,
you have been asked to develop a one page letter (single
space 12 font) to the extraterrestrials to help them
understand some of the complexities of the issues
affecting human society. As such, NASA has given you
a list of topics (see below) from which you will select the
problem or issue to be covered in your letter. NASA has
asked that your letter (1) provide an honest and frank
assessment of the issues or problems related to the topic
you selected (20 points); (2) clearly outline and carefully
describe two options you believe are potential solutions
to the problem or issues of the topic you selected (15
points); and 3) offer a well thought out educated opinion
about which one of the options you think would best
address the problem or issues related to your topic being
sure to explain why you think this option is best
(10points); and (4) be written grammatically correct with
attention to word choice, spelling. You will be asked to
provide a verbal review of your letter to the NASA
officials for their consideration of including your letter as
one of them provided to the extraterrestrial inhabitants of
Kepler (5 points). As such you should try to minimize
reading the letter but rather focus on extemporaneously
sharing its contents with the listening audience at NASA.
Once you have completed your verbal presentation, you
are expected to hand in a typewritten copy of the letter to
the lead at NASA (aka, your instructor) for final review
and assessment.
Remember that your letter will make an important
impression upon the extraterrestrials and will be taken on
the next Space Shuttle flight scheduled for 30 days from
now so do your research and get to writing your letter.
