Hull House Assignment
Jane Addams dreamed about everyone in the world being dead except her. With that the responsibility of making a wagon wheel. This help mold her to start preparing for the Hull House. Beginning, with taking accountability to help others achieve a goal to help others. Jane goes into detail stating that the village blacksmith shop was “all there,” and that is where she always stood. I took it as if she observed what type of changes needed to happen in the world around her and she analyzed what was in her power of what she could do in this world. Jane made it clear she never knew how, but realizing that the affairs in the world could not resume until she at least accomplished making one wagon wheel was the boost she needed to prepare her for the Hull House. in so many ways The mill stood in a neighborhood next to one of the poorest quarters that Jane Adams saw before. This was the place, Jane Addams first witnessed real poverty. Jane rationalized how she was in tune with their needs at that moment. Jane realized they were less fortunate than her and did not comprehend why one would live that way. The environment that she saw they lived in became her concern. Jane started to have compassion for them. She wanted to renovate the undeveloped neighborhood. The second incident that was selected is when Jane Addams was young and this where she had it in her character and developed social skills to help others. The persistency to be involved in all ages around her to form a solid foundation for those who needed help and feel loved. Jane’s father was a dominant and wealthy leader in her life. He helped her make the decision to shape the role of social work. The third incident, Polly, which was her mother’s nurse, her friend, and caretaker. Polly was the first real death that Jane had to deal with and hit very hard. Jane took care of Polly as she recalls sitting with her and Polly would call her Sarah, her mother’s name that is deceased. Jane experienced being there for someone else’s needs other than her own.
Jane was appalled when she was offered the bribe because of the statement that was referenced in regards to her father after he died. She was aware her father never took a bribe. Jane was in a compromising situation and could not believe it. She did not accept the bribe. Jane wanted the children of immigrants to emulate was Abraham Lincoln’s attitude, that common people are the most valuable contribution of our moral lives. It gives an insight that it is a good thing to help others in need.
The missionary ways that she observed did not fit her criteria and emotional well-being. It may have to do with her father never being a part of the church. Jane’s father did teach his way of beliefs to them and she honored his morals and values that he had instilled her as a person. Jane wanted to take a more free and open approach with religion. Jane took her knowledge and ideas and used them to her advantage to teach women education. She taught them skills, such as math to evolve into more progression to help others. Her strides to make things better gave women encouragement and the power to aide others. Jane enlightened the teaching methods to utilize in the Hull House to make an overall better experience for others to have there.
Jane had strong beliefs that being around the poor and interacting with them made you understand their conditions and ways more. She believed if you were just learning in a classroom you were not getting the full experience of knowledge. Jane thoughts where you lose the emotional aspect to get what is needed for the less fortunate. In Madrid, Jane attended a bull fight and that is when she decided to start doing. She thought it was a beautiful place to visit and to see the horses and bulls killed with no compassion or remorse was enough for her. At this point, she learned there would be no more self-realization. Jane wanted to use her ideas and contributions at home.
In Chapter 5, Jane was searching with Miss Starr in Chicago for a place to carry out her plans in the community. Jane was determined to carry out her mission to help others and make improvements using every resource that they had to them. They were all coming up out of their pockets to pull this off and maintain the goal. They had to go through so many locations from the education department, with city missionaries, and the news reporters. The perfect location was needed and it was a hassle to locate the perfect setting to carry out their work. The policy of the public authorities of never taken into consideration, and always waiting to be advised to do their duty, it was fatal in a neighborhood where there is little initiative among the citizens. Jane wanted the setting to not be like she saw where most of the houses looked rundown. Most of the were either old built 20 years earlier, had a poor framework, or built where they stood. The environment was not the best to be in at all. The streets were filthy and the city had no effort or desire to clean it up. The citizens there was a product of their environment and it was so underdeveloped it was hard to try and get help. Jane was desperate to get everything up and running and they finally did. In the weeks that they tried to get everything going, they found a neighborhood that was poor area and but will be able to get the job done for the people in that area in Chicago. In the very first weeks, Miss Star started a reading party that led the group of young women to follow and make a change in their environment as they were interested in the story. It talks more in this chapter about their first resident at the Hull house, and she was so happy and charming old lady who gave five consecutive readings to a grateful audience. She came to Hull House for ten days because she wished to live once more in an atmosphere where idealism ran high. The Hull House purpose set up for people to gain knowledge and skills to cope with being underprivileged and in the area. To improve the lives of others and focus on change for them.
In Chapter 8, the main focus was on the problems with poverty in the area. It had become clear to them in the first months of the residency at the Hull House that the poverty level was horrible. It was so heartbreaking for the most part because of the stories from the residents that came in there. One incident, where a little boy came in with an elderly woman, he said that the lady was sleeping in the bed made up by the stove for six weeks in their kitchen. Her son had passed away and that she had nowhere to go. The little boy stated that the Hull House had so much more to offer than what they house could. Then focuses on another incident, where a father had been out of work for winter, most of the furniture had been pawned and it got so bad because of the children’s shoes could not be replaced for them to go to school. The Hull House focuses on this chapter to provide resources and make an effort for people lives to be restored. Jane knew her hard work was paying off the more people were aware of the Hull houses available through Chicago. The reality was everyone needed help to get back on their feet and move forward with life. The poor needed reliable needs that they did not have access to on their own. Hull Houses provided them the safe atmosphere where they can fill safe and learn new ways to cope with life skills that they carry with them to wherever they go.
In the story, Hilda Satt Polacheck was writing to inform that the Hull House was like the land of opportunities to the poor. It provided many outlets that helped establish economic growth and change for people to seek to better themselves. The Hull House was welcoming and very resourceful. It was almost as it was too good to be true. She felt like everything was falling into place for her with the help of Jane Addams. There was a moment where Jane showed compassion and paid for her tuition to go to school. She credits Jane Addams for her hard work and what she did for the Hull House to make it a better place to be in. Overall, the author felt joyed and since of appreciation for everything, Jane Addams accomplished for herself and others.
