Introduction
You have been presented with several definitions of intelligence and the intelligence process in the lectures and readings. One of the themes for this week’s readings is building a universal understanding of intelligence and the intelligence process.

Initial Post
In your initial post, please explain what your idea is about intelligence and the intelligence process. If you were invited to make a presentation on intelligence, how would you explain your position during a panel discussion? What examples support your idea? What examples do you not consider to be part of the intelligence process?

Secondary Posts
Read postings provided by your instructor or fellow students. Read and respond to the conclusions drawn by your classmates. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply throughout the week.

following student post: “Defining intelligence is as difficult as defining terrorism. When we look at how much is involved in intelligence, trying to come up with a usable, simple definition is not possible. According to the CIA, “Formulating a brief definition of so broad a term as intelligence is like making a microscopic portrait of a continent, and the product of this effort is likely to have less value than the process of arriving at it” (Bimfort, 2011, para 1). With this being a struggle, I think I would focus more on what we are trying to obtain by gaining intelligence and what types of intelligence we need to make determinations on national security.

There are two main types of intelligence you can gather that from human and that from technology. From that there are many ways to collect on each of those areas. You can collect on technology by using banking records, public records, criminal records and even social

media
foot prints. There are several ways you could use internet trails to track where a potential threat or target could have gone or to even remove a person from a list of interested persons. The technology side of collecting intelligence is extremely vast and became even more intense after the passing of the PATRIOT ACT. The other form of collecting information is human collection. This is collecting intelligence from persons during interviews, observations, wiretapping conversations, and even DNA information. When this is done it could be at many locations all over the world. It could be a terrorist bomb shop in a cave in Afghanistan or an apartment in Seattle, WA.

Once this is all collected it then has to be analyzed to determine if it is reasonable and relevant to the case or situation in which one is investigating. Collecting information can sometimes lead to large amount of useless intelligence. Meaning that just because it was collected doesn’t make it relevant. After it is analyzed, categorized on classification level and put together it is then presented to the leads or committees that requested the information. This information can be about so many things; business, governments,

people
, places, buildings, groups, gangs, military and more”
