I need a reply to the following. It can be positive or negative. Not to in-depth but not just a few sentences. Does that make sense?
Traditional African philosophies differ from modern African philosophies, but the roots are the same. African philosophy is based on communitarian ideals. This means that African morals and ideals are centered around family and the main idea is that a person’s identity comes from who they are surrounded with in their community and family. African philosophy also caters to the idea that your family stays with you after their death in the spirit world, and are there to guide family members and act as role models and leaders.
Out of the non-Western philosophies discussed in the text and in the handout, this was one that I understood the most. I was already sort of familiar with African philosophy because of background knowledge and books and movies with which I had learned about it. It is interesting to note that although this is an African philosophy originally, these kinds of ideals are seen all over the world and are a large part of other cultures. I appreciate the ideas of family and community being the driving force for individuals and how one’s identity is based on who they surround themselves with.
