HUMAN150 Target Model of Oppressions Reflection Worksheet This reflection has three parts:
1. First, read this overview of the agent/target model of oppressions and skillsets for addressing them, created by Leticia Nieto https://www.evergreen.edu/sites/default/files/writingcenter/docs/cv/Nieto_Ask%20Leticia.pdf (Links to an external site.)
2. Then use this worksheet to reflect on your own role(s) within this model. You can print this file, download in an editable format, or redraw the charts on it — whatever works for you http://www.interpretereducation.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Adressing-Agent-Target-Handout-Blank-Copy-copy.pdf (Links to an external site.)
Study the definitions of status, power, and rank (page 4 of the ‘Ask Leticia” doc) and list the aspects of your identity that you think fall into these categories in the upper left chart of the worksheet. Consider the social categories you belong to and whether they each rank you as more of an agent or a target. Note these rankings in the upper right chart of the worksheet. Customize this worksheet in any way that makes sense to you. Then save your personalized version to submit here.
3. Think about which parts of your identity or which aspects of your status, power, and rank come with a distinct language. What groups do you belong to that have different ways of talking to each other, certain verbal codes, specialized vocabulary, inside jokes, degrees of formality, acceptable names, etc? Is there a difference between which languages you feel are personally the most valuable to you, and which ones your culture values most? Write a paragraph about those different languages, and whether some of them carry more weight than others.
Submit both (part 2) your personalized chart and (part 3) your written paragraph in this assignment.
You can attach multiple files or, for a bonus point, you can submit an audio/visual recording in which you share/show/describe/read your reflections.
