Introduction

The topic of this paper is “how to live before you die,” from an interactive talk done by Steve Jobs the CEO of Apple and PIXAR Animations. The audience being aIDressed constitute of college graduates from Stanford University. Steve sheds light about his achievements in life and how he was able to follow his dreams. The fact that he had never graduated into college makes the audience curious enough to know how he was able to succeed in life. According to Steve, he never perceived the importance of being in college as much as his parents would spend all their money on his education. He decided to drop out instead and look for other alternatives in life. It seemed scary and devastating in the beginning but as he looked back, he realized that this was the best decision he ever made. Life is about making decisions and choices. It takes courage, determination and focus for an individual to achieve success. Going to lectures and seminars is not a pathway to success but following your dreams and intuitions is what will make you great.

Apparently, Steve Jobs talk was a combination of irony and satire. He decided to use these two elements in his talk which made the audience react in amusement over the three stories of his life. The audience reacted simply because they could not understand how a prominent Founder of Apple and PIXAR, rose to where he was without necessarily  going through intense moments of book reading and memorizing of journals. One is left to wonder how a college drop-out transformed and became a millionaire by merely following his intuitions.

The main point is started in the miIDle of the speech when he was giving his second story about love and loss. He gives a background description of how he started Apple industry in his parents’ garage and later on his experience led him to his love life.

• How were you able to cope with the trauma of starting your own company then later on being fired?
• Did you have any doubts and mixed fears in regards to dropping out of college?
• How did you cope with the painful news that you were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer?

Response

First question: It was really hard to cope with the trauma because in the beginning it seemed scary and devatsting.However,I never lost sight in what I wanted to achieve because I still loved what I did.reallity had it that I was rejected by my own employees but the love of what I did still remained. The heaviness of being rejected was paramount but it later on made me see challenges in a much lighter way. It was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. You cannot afford to settle for less in life you need to focus on what you love doing most because no one can take it away for you.

Second question: Dropping out of school was the most difficult decision in my life because the classes I was required to take did not interest me. However I had to trust that the decision I made was going to be beneficial that is why I decided to take calligraphy classes. Looking back I realized that I had made the best decisions ever since dropping out made me design the first Mackintosh computer. Life is about joining dots and you cannot afford to connect the dots as you go forward but you can only connect them form behind.

Third question: It was sad news for me and the thoughts of how my family would react clouded my mind. Life had to move on and the reality of death seemed clear for me. I believed that life is a change agent; it will never remain the same because it clears away the old. Once you realize that everything else is secondary then you will be in a better position to know that all external expectations,pride,fear of embarrassment and failure will fade away in the face of death.

Fourth question: I would always want to live in denial but looking back gives me the courage to move forward. Mistakes will be made and we will often receive bad news but achievers are those who learn form life hurdles and make something positive out of it.

Counter arguments

It does not make sense that one can stay as a drop out and still trust that all will work out well in life because he will be left frustrated and hopeless in his endeavours.In aIDition, the chances of not succeeding in future becomes high. To most people being patient is not a virtue instead the longer they take to achieve a certain goal in life, the longer the frustrations grow. As for Steve Jobs it took him 10 years to design the 1^st Mackintosh computer.

Questions were raised as to why the Founder of Apple Company was being fired by his own employees. In my own opinion was unfair and quite devastating for Steve to step down after he had used all his knowledge and ideas to design computer software when no one else had the capacity to do so.

Steve embraces death beyond one’s imagination when he states that the most important tool in making the decisions in life is through remembering that one will soon die. That death has to take primary position for an individual to avoid falling into the trap of thinking that he or she is going to lose. It is impossible to think of death when life seems to be a challenge. In fact, death becomes the final resolution because it is painful to bear in mind that those you live behind will suffer.

Conclusion

Steve’s story is a depiction of courage and persistence. We see him tackle every stage in his life with the consistence and passion driven towards success. He made firm decisions in his life by following his own heart and intuition. It is not easy for him to be way laid by other people’s thinking or opinions. Therefore, in life you have to be persistent and courageous enough to follow your dreams because not all people would support you. You need to be focused on what you want to achieve and be confident that whatever you pursue will bear worthy fruits.
