In 1964, SNCC determined that to effect change in Mississippi they needed to bring a larger number of volunteers to the state to work on voter registration and community building activities. “Freedom Summer” was a program that recruited volunteers from colleges and universities across the country, black and white, men and women, and brought them to Mississippi for the summer to work on civil rights. Those who had been in Mississippi in 1963, like Bob Moses and Anne Moody, knew the dangers of bringing over four hundred young people to the state, and so SNCC prepared a training session for all volunteers before they left for the South. Volunteers were given documents like those attached to help prepare them for Mississippi.
