Another primary source is Phyllis Schlafly’s critique of modern feminism, The Power of the Positive Woman (New York: Arlington House, 1977). This book is available in Shapiro Library.

One secondary source is “Competing conceptions of the first ladyship: Public responses to Betty Ford’s 60 Minutes interview” a detailed analysis of the reaction to the 60 Minutes interview by Maryanne Borrelli (2001; Presidential Studies Quarterly Vol. 31, No. 3 (September 2001); 397-414), which analyzes more than 1,400 letters that Mrs. Ford received after the interview, almost 67 percent of which expressed negative reactions.

Another secondary source is Republican Women: Feminism and Conservatism From Suffrage Through the Rise of the New Right, by Catherine Rymph (2006; Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press). This book is available in Shapiro Library.

Thesis Statement

Based on my research to date, I will try to support the following thesis: Even with the strong support of an extremely popular Republican First Lady, the ERA could overcome neither the divisions within the Republican Party, nor the conservative appeals of Phyllis Schlafly. Topic and Research Question
For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on Project Apollo space missions.
On 25 May 1961 President John F. Kennedy announced to the nation a goal of sending an
American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade. President Kennedy confided in a
press conference on 21 April that he was leaning toward committing the nation to a large- scale
project to land Americans on the Moon. “If we can get to the moon before the Russians, then we
should.” It was, as political scientist John M. Logsdon has suggested, “one of the last major
political acts of the Cold War. The Moon Project was chosen to symbolize U.S. strength in the
head-to-head global competition with the Soviet Union.”
In examining the Moon Project I will attempt to answer the question; how did the Apollo
space missions increase scientific competition between the United States and Soviet Union?
Why was this issue so important? It is not secret that the race to the moon was a race
between America and Russia. As technology was advancing in both countries so was the tension
to get to the moon first. This race pushed America farther and faster than we thought we could
go at the time because as a country we felt that loosing the race was not an option.
Search terms that I have used in my research so far include: NASA, Cold War, Moon
Project, Apollo, Project Apollo, Space Missions, John F. Kennedy and Race to the Moon.
One valuable secondary source that I came across was Logsdon, J. M. (2015). After Apollo:
Richard Nixon and the American space program. New York, New York : Palgrave Macmillan,
2015. I found that this book had a lot of great insight into the thoughts President Nixon had
about America’s Space Program during and after the landing on the moon.
Another extremely valuable secondary source that I found was Bizony, P. (1994, July).
Politics of Apollo. Omni, 16(10), 44+. In this text, they give a great back ground and history on
not only the state of the country but also the accomplishments and journeys in the political and
economic layer of the Apollo projects.
