Im trying to study for my English course and I need some help to understand this question.
Cultural Boarder and Identity
I was born in a very humble background that we relied on our neighbors at times so that we can sustain our hanger. This is an aspect that made me learn that in life we need each other to overcome hardships. As humans, we tend to be affected by the surrounding that we live at. Today we look at the cultural borders and how they affect the identity of human beings. Mainly these cultural borders are formed by some of a behavioral pattern people adopt, their norms or their ways of living or even their beliefs. As wild as our societies may be, we all live in groups that we all identify and define ourselves with. In some aspect we actually belong in them. We can hence conclude that people who share the same culture end up having the same identity. (Sanchez-Burks 2000) During birth is when we are introduced to the understanding of our cultural identity. The values and the attitudes that we are exposed to shape us and hence the need of we humans having the need to belong. We all at all the times need to feel accepted and comfortable with a certain group. However we must embrace the fact that we cannot be reduced to a part of our community. (Lera Boroditsky, TED) We are human who live independently. The experiences that we generally have a great role in shaping who we really are. Every individual has a different and unique path and these path have a great contribution in changing or even adding up to our identities also to the identities of those that we relate to. Hence, culture plays a major role in shaping a persons identity because we have a constant relationship with our communities from birth, the values that we are introduced to and the surroundings.
There are situations where you find people bouncing back from negative situations effectively while it is different when it comes to another person who may find it very difficult coming out of struggling situations. (Boski, 2004) That point where one is in a position to walk out of a difficult situation can as well be known as resilience. We often find ourselves in events like one has lost a loved one, physical hardships or even diversity and we have to deal with them to avoid down falls. From the native communities that we come from, there are norms and ways that we deal with situations and the way we behave depending on an event. For instance, the rites of passage every group have their own ways to go about and that is what brings about the difference among communities, When a person is new in a certain community maybe due to intermarriage or even on visitation and happens to experience such situations that are different to his or her norm, they may end up feeling not at home and this is where resilience is applied. We are taught on how to focus on the positive aspects and emotions of the situation at a higher rate. In this case this individual should appreciate that there is something new that he has learnt and appreciate it. (Gecas, 1982) During our early life, we had a chance to develop and enhance our individual characteristics and the strengths that act as protective factors from misfortunes. These are strengths that are generated from the safe and responsive relationships we had with the adults back then. The strengths can as well be strengthened by the protective factors that are found within the environments that a child lives. The protective factors that are within self are closely linked to the development of self and social wellbeing.
There is a way that you and I view our own personalities and there is also the way we relate to each other. Living thing just like we are, happen to differ in so many ways. When it comes to communication, cultural factors just like I had mentioned earlier, economy and religion. All these diversity factors form a sense of identity. There are moments that you think about your life and remember the circumstances that may have strengthened your abilities. Could be during a prize giving day at work or even a sports day competition where you realized that you had accomplished a goal that you had set. In this case where you have put all your efforts and has made you go beyond the comfort zone, one develops some confidence and positive self-concept. (Buyse, E, 2012) the people who nurtured you and contributed to you gaining the interest in particular activities, could be couches, your parents, grandparents teachers or even parents are the reason you realized your abilities and talents such developments are influenced by a persons cultural background, personal experiences and again the relationships with the people who are around us. Affirmations we get from our mentors as well can shape our sense of identity. When you are good at something, that ability will stick with you no matter the circumstance.
Teachers at preschool are most likely to encounter children and families that originate from various communities with different life experiences. Understanding the complexity of the different cultures influence on identity will do them good. I will give a difference between a parent who has encountered a lifetime that is full of encouragements and praise verses a parents that has had a rough experience of isolation and critics. The kind of parenting their children get is very different. The later will have better parenting skills and will support the child to working hard while the other may not find it a big deal in taking part in the childs education. (Lusting 2013). As a preschool teacher it is important that she is in a position to provide the young children and their families culturally and developmentally sensitive care which will help them be successful in class work which will not only be effective immediately but even in the future. As a child grows and matures there is a possibility that their identities can change but it depends on the time and place.
As I conclude, we can all come to terms that from the assessment, culture does affect the decisions we make. It influences the way we value the different traits like self-esteem humility and assertiveness. It is important that we realized the way we identify and feel about ourselves is greatly influenced by our immediate environment. For instance am one person who grew in a community that made me feel accepted and hence my courage and confidence to believe in my abilities. I can now stand in front of a crowd and tell my story without the fear of judgment. I have been in a position of discovering who I am. I challenge you to think of a person who has been able perform a particular task chances are this person has received support and positive feedback which helped in fostering a sense of identity. We can also agree that parenthood and life events do shape who we are. We definitely are not the same as we were about ten years ago. There are major goals that we all have achieved could be academically or even economically and these ate events that have changed how we view ourselves.
