Proposal
Summary and Introduction
The targeted population for this proposal is aimed towards students in high school who
are classified as juniors and seniors. This goal of this proposal is to spike the interest of these
high school students to pursue a career in the criminal justice field. In order to accomplish this, I
will discuss current criminal justice news, what a career in criminal justice has to offer,
requirements for a typical job such as Juvenile Probation Officer, and current or past criminal
justice majors thoughts about their careers in this field currently.
In order to effectively grasp, how it important those who are in the criminal justice field
are I want to discuss typically incarceration trends. According to the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People, Combing the number of people in prison and jail with those
under parole or probation supervision, 1 in every 31 adults, or 3.2 percent of the population is
under some form of correctional control. Criminal justice has always been a battling issue. Here
in America, we are constantly battling an unfair criminal justice system and it is imperative that
we have diligent individuals working for the betterment of a criminal justice system and a better
environment as a whole.
Rational and Significant
Issues within the law enforcement and criminal justice field has been a consistent societal issues
for decades, but within recent years has become a more dominant issue. Americans, specifically
African Americans have been assaulted by members of the police system, both physically and
contemporaneous ways (Chaney & Robertson, 2013). In order to try and eliminate the
reoccurrence of harsh treatment, it is important that the number of criminal justice professionals
continue to increase. America needs more professionals in this field to help defray these acts and
serve as an advocate and ideal protective leader for Americans.
America also needs professionals in this career path to help prevent those with extensive criminal
backgrounds such as Freddie Gray from recommitting crimes and as a result being retaliated
against by law enforcement. Research has shown that if professionals intervene early the
outcome ultimately predicts fewer offenders/re-occurring offenders (Assur, 2001). It is important
that America have criminal justice professionals that work to rehabilitated juvenile and adult
offenders. Americans will benefit and be a lot safer if there were more criminal justice
professionals who cared about the citizens of America and wanted to create a change not only
within their community, but also on a state and national level. The field of criminal justice needs
more advocates to ensure that families of police brutality are being heard and that although a
love one can never be replaced, justice is served. With more advocates of social injustice,
families of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, and Eric Gardner would have received justice for the
death of their loved one.
Plan of the Proposed Work
The proposed plan consist of a two hour, two part session. The first part of this session would
consist of current news reports detailing injustice carried out through our criminal justice system
and the second part would consist different career opportunities and information with a Bachelor
of Science in Criminal Justice.
Facilities and Equipment
The facility utilized for this project will be the auditorium at Lamar University. The auditorium
was chosen because it comes with sets and we would not have to worry about moving and
stacking chairs when finished. We will need a computer with projector set up so that we can
show a PowerPoint as we are talking. A PowerPoint allows for the students to have something to
look at. We will also need a microphone so in case there are a lot of students, those who are
speaking do not have to hell.
Personnel
This proposal will cause for assistance from varies departments at Lamar University in order to
be beneficial and helpful to these students. I will request that we have someone come in and
speak to the students from the following: Financial Aid, Criminal Justice Professors, current
criminal justice students (if applicable), and Academic Services. Someone from financial aid will
speak to the students in regards to financing their education such as Federal AFSA, scholarships,
and grants. Criminal justice professor who will give the students an idea of the different type of
classes are offered. I will also seek assistance from current on-line criminal justice students to
give the potential students the idea of what completing this degree on-line is like, pros and cons,
and just any advice the current student may have to offer potential students. The last person I will
have come and speak to the students is someone from academic services to discuss tutoring
opportunities and how to get other academic services as an on-line student.
Budget
The cost for completing a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree varies depending on
college/university. Lamar University offers the online Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
degree. The cost to attend this university and program full-time (12 credit hours) is
approximately $8000/per year. The University of Texas at Arlington, offers an on-campus

Interview with Marcie Allen, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, JPO
1. Why did you choose a career in criminal justice?
a. Originally I started in law enforcement as a Detention Service Officer because I
needed a job and a friend told me they were hiring. After about two years, I
started to think about law enforcement as a long-standing career. I started talking
to police officers and special response team members in my building about them
and their careers. A lot of them had been in a lot of different areas within this field
and has a lot of opportunities that you could not get without a degree. I noticed
that a lot of them had careers in criminal justice and social work. So I researched
jobs and job descriptions and decided I wanted to pursue a criminal justice degree.
So 17 years later, here I am.
2. What is your background in this field?
a. Well I originally started out as a Detention Service Officer, which I worked for
six years before I decided to pursue my Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. I

graduated from Texas Christian University with my degree four years later. My
first job after I got my degree was as a Juvenile Correctional Officer. I did that for
four years then I decided I wanted to still work with juveniles, but in a different
setting. So I started working for Dallas County Juvenile Probation Department as
a Juvenile Probation Officer and have been there for a little over ten years.
What is your current position
a. I am a Juvenile Probation Officer for Dallas County.
As a Juvenile Probation Officer what exactly do you do?
a. Well I do a lot, but in short: I supervise juveniles placed on probation by the
courts. I work to ensure that the juveniles adhere to court mandated terms of
probation. My overall goal is to help guide juveniles in the right direction that
would allow them to become responsible, ethnical, global citizens within their
community. I also coordinate services as needed to help ensure these youths do
not break the law again.
What type of crimes have these juveniles committed
a. Their offense depends. Some have property offenses (burglary), drug offenses,
public-order offenses (disorderly conduct), violent offenses (assault
What age do you work with?
a. Juveniles are considered anyone under the age of 18. I do have some offenders
who are 14 and 15 year old. The youngest I ever had was maybe 13.
What education is required?
a. For this particularly position, you have to have a Bachelors degree in Criminal
Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or a related field. Some jobs require
you to have experience in the related field as well. Those with previous
experience in jail/court system are more likely to get hired than someone who
does not. However, not all jobs in this field require a degree, but those jobs are
limited and have fewer opportunities for advancement. With a Bachelors degree
you have more opportunities for advancement and flexibility and increased pay.
What are some characteristics and/or skills you think someone pursuing this type of
career field may need?
a. Well I would definitely recommend a strong backbone. Often times
criminals/juveniles/inmates attempt to abuse you verbally and say things to try
and get under your skin. So its important to stand strong and do not let their
words phase you. As a probation officer, I definitely recommend excellent oral
and written communication skills since a vast majority of your work will be done
through either type of communication. A probation officer also needs to be able to
work with a diverse group of juveniles who come from harden backgrounds. Not
to stay all of the juveniles come from a bad background, but there is a good
number that do. A probation officer also needs to be compassionate but demand
respect and value the human worth of a person. Even though you are working
with criminals they still deserve to be serviced and treated with respect.
Everybodys favorite question: What is the salary?
a. Just like all jobs, salary depends on education/experience. Obviously the more
experience/education the more money. But the median salary is between $42,000
and $47,000. There is however some in this field that make as much as $60,000 to
$70,000. But that comes with time of course.
10. What are some benefits of a career in this field?
a. I think the BEST benefit in this field is being that person to create change. Serve
as an influence and help to change someones life for the better. Helping them
accomplish something they may not have otherwise been able to accomplish. My
job in particular, allows for an flexible schedule and stability.
11. What are the cons of a career in this field?
a. Personally, the only con of this field is not being able to save some of my parolees
from what I like to refer to as the slammer. There has been times where I have
seen some of my parolees potential and have tried time after time to get them to a
point where once they are released that they will do right, but I fail. In this line of
work, I always give my all and sometimes that is not get enough. A lot of times
my parolees will be weeks away from getting off of probation and they do
something that we have worked so hard to try avoid and they get their time
extended or have to go into a detention center.
