In this writing assignment, students will choose an episode/scene from a television show or movie in which at least one of the main characters is a child or an adolescent. The film or show should highlight an individual with a diverse background (meaning that an individual not representative of what is considered “mainstream” is highlighted). Students will summarize the scene and analyze the individual and contextual influences portrayed. Students will a) apply course concepts, b) research, and c) relevant theories to explain the experiences of the character. Next, students will a) reflect on whether the depiction is realistic, b) how it illustrates or deviates from course material, and c) how it is similar or different from their own experiences. Below is an outline of the elements of the paper.

Introduction of TV Show or Film (9 points) (Approx. ¾ to 1 page)

  • Names the TV show/film and provides a brief introduction – 3 points
    • Where the film takes place, Summary of the movie
  • Provides a description of the character to be analyzed (age, race, SES, family make-up, gender, problems faced in the show/film, etc.) – 4 points
  • Introduction of concepts to be discussed later in the paper (1 brief sentence) – 2 points
    • Example: In this paper, the following concepts will be applied: responsive parenting, diathesis-stress model, deep culture, and ecological systems theory.

Application to Course Material and Theories (30 points) (Approx. 2 pages)

  • Four course concepts (includes developmental/family theories) are explicitly named and elaborated upon. Plan to use one paragraph for each concept. Introduce and define the concept, and then clearly make the connection to the child/adolescent. Note: If discussing a stage theory, select the appropriate stage- you do not have to describe irrelevant stages.
