I’m going to need a proposal of what you are going to write about at some point before you turn in the paper to me.

This paper is based on examples of divine myths from Powell,
chapters 4-9. The Judaeo-Christian God, according to sacred scriptures, has always existed and has always been the supreme deity. This was unusual in the context of other ancient mythologies, where divine myths describe the struggles that gods had to undergo in order to find and claim their rightful place in the universe.

The question: What would you argue are the three most important
strategies that gods employed in divine myth to secure and maintain their power? Why do you consider these three the most important ones? Support your answer with discussion and analysis of divine myths. You may use Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern examples of divine myths.
Hints:
• Please be assured that I do not have an ideal answer in mind for this or any paper topic. I want to see how you marshal evidence in support of your own ideas.
• Powell does not answer this question. But he does provide the examples that you will use as evidence.
• You may also include examples from Powell, chapters 10-12, if you wish.
• As you read about each god in Powell, take some notes on how he/she came into power. For some gods there will be a lot of information. For others there will be less, but they could still be mentioned briefly as aIDitional supporting examples, if they use the same strategies as more prominent gods. For still others there may be no relevant information at all, and you may ignore them entirely.
• Your paper should discuss strategies employed by a variety of gods, not just Zeus and other kings of the gods.
• Your paper should not discuss human heroes.

What should be included in your proposal:
The following items should be included in your proposal. Number your responses and list them in this order.
1. a list of gods in Powell, chapters 4-9, who have stories of how they came into power, and the page numbers where you found this information.
2. a list of strategies that these gods employed, with a full list of examples of gods from item 1 who used each strategy. I see two common errors in #2. First, students sometimes do not organize #2 by the strategies. Suppose one of your strategies is “castration.” Type the word “castration” and list all the gods from #1 who use that strategy. Do the same for all the 22 strategies you think of. Second, students sometimes list only three strategies, since they will need only three strategies in #3. Bad move. Really interesting things can happen if you
try to generate every possibility you can think of, without doing too much self-editing. If you give me a list of many strategies—even including those that only one god seems to have used—I may be able to help you combine some of them to improve your paper. If you list only three strategies in #2, you will not receive full credit.
3. Identify the three most important strategies that the gods used, and write a thesis. This should be the last thing you write, and it should come directly out of the work you did on
items 1-2.
