For your initial post in the discussion topic, identify at least one push/pull factor (a factors that pushes people out of one area and pulls them into another area) causing the movement of Latin American people, and give specific examples. How does location, either relative or absolute, factor into this movement? Use the Themes of Geography resource to support your discussion of movement and location while addressing this prompt.

In response to your peers, you should make connections from the original post to your choice of any other themes of geography that might be impacted by this kind of profound movement of people.

Hello Class,

Although there are a number of reasons for push/pull migration is think violence is a chief reason for the push/pull factor in Latin American migration. With the increase of violence in Mexico due to drug cartels many people are seeking safety and better quality of life for their families. Ports of entry to the United States and major transportation routes often see the worst violence due to these areas being contested for control (Nijman, Muller & De Bilj, 2017). Although the violence may be declining it is still very present. In November there was the story about gunmen ambushing and killing three mothers and six children who were U.S. citizens, there was also a two-day gun battle killing twenty-two people between the cartel and Mexican security forces across the border from Texas (Còrdoba, 2019). All humans need and want to feel safe, we also want to protect our families, so we are willing to travel in search of a better life. Another key factor in the movement of migrants is the location of Mexico and the border it shares with North America. It is easier to get to the northern border by rail, car or foot than trying to get a boat big enough to safely cross large bodies of water.

The economy is a key driver in migration. The loss of a job may require a family to relocate in search of another one, if the jobs are scarce in their own region. The promise of a better job could be a draw for workers to another location. The shifting economic landscape of a city that is becoming a tourist attraction, as illustrated in the textbook with the example of Cabo San Lucas, (a city that is becoming a new, or second, home for many North Americans) can push out longtime residents if the cost of housing and necessities is driven up by tourism (The World Today, 2016). All of these things can cause people to move around their region of origin, and can also cause them to seek a home in another region, leading to cross-country immigration. To quote the Themes of Geography resource: “Movement of people, money, goods, and ideas is inherently geographical” (Themes of Geography, n.d.).
