Cultural Behaviors and Communication
Behaviors vary across different cultures, and they affect the way people interact and
communicate with one another. There are behaviors from other cultures that I find confusing. For
example, how men from the Anglo-Saxon community talk while being very close to each other.
Being Hispanic, I find this to be an intrusion of someone’s personal space. Additionally, I always
find it intriguing that in some cultures, people can kiss strangers while greeting them. There are
behaviors which are reasonable to me that my peers from other cultures deem confusing. For
instance, we maintain eye contact throughout a conversation. Besides, people find it puzzling
that men can hold hands for long after greeting each other, something that is a norm in our
culture.
Unfamiliarity with other people’s culture may stall the development of interpersonal
relationships. It hinders effective communication between the two parties. For instance, one may
find themselves using gestures and mannerisms that the other culture finds offensive. Besides,
unfamiliarity may lead to stereotyping and bias whereby one creates assumptions about another
people’s culture. Moreover, it brings about the misinterpretation of information by all parties due
to the distortion of the intended messages (Ting-Toomey & Dorjee, 2018). The employment of
inappropriate semantics in communication may cause the other person to disregard a
conversation and the development of a healthy interpersonal relationship. Individuals find it
disrespectful when people do not embrace and appreciate their culture while communicating.
Therefore, knowing other people’s culture is the key to establishing cross-cultural relationships.

To familiarize with individuals from other cultures, one needs to observe some few
measures. Primarily, we can keenly observe how people from different cultures act in situations.
Through observation, one may decipher the appropriate gestures and language specific to that
culture. (Neuliep, 2017). Most importantly, one may foster friendships with people from
different cultures. It is advisable, to interact with people by asking to know more about them and
their way of life. One can also ask when they are unsure of the right way to communicate with
people of a culture. Additionally, we should avoid stereotypes and biases of other cultures’
behaviors. Instead, we should try interacting with individuals from other cultures to better
understand their beliefs and behaviors. Moreover, one can read literature and watch films
regarding other people’s cultures. This gives someone an idea of the acceptable and nonacceptable mannerisms in other cultures.
