Instructions: Choose a topic of interest or significance to you that reflects a cultural
perspective, activity, practice, or custom that is outside your/our particular frame
of knowledge/experience as Americans (this means you will have to do some
research). Prepare and deliver an informative speech appropriate for that topic.
Source requirements: You must consult and effectively cite at least 3 external sources
that support your central idea and your main points. All sources should be factual,
reliable, well-supported, current, verifiable, fair, and comprehensive. All sources must
be cited in 3 different places:
1. Verbally in oral footnotes as you actually deliver your speech. Oral footnotes
should include
a. Author’s name
b. Publication name
c. Date or approximate date of publication (e.g., “the August 2009 issue of…”
or “last week’s edition of…”
2. Written in in-text citations in the text of your outline. In-text citations should follow
the same guidelines as oral citations and should include:
a. Author’s name
b. Publication name
c. Date or approximate date of publication (e.g., “the August 2009 issue of…”
or “last week’s edition of…”
3. Written in a reference list immediately following your outline. The citations in your
reference list should follow the guidelines found in the Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association (6th Edition).
Topic requirements:
The speech must reflect a cultural perspective, activity, practice, or custom that is
outside your/our particular frame of knowledge/experience as Americans (this
means you will have to do some research). If you can clearly explain the unfamiliar to
an audience, then you should have no problem with the familiar in future speaking
situations. You may elect to compare and/or contrast an aspect of two cultures or
discuss an aspect of one culture in detail in order to address the importance of a
global perspective. Grading criteria for this speech includes:
Content: At least three (3) “verbal footnotes/citations” from at least two (2)
different, credible sources must be cited during the presentation. *Please Note:
Wikipedia is not a credible source. Listeners should come away from your speech
knowing more about the topic than they did before the speech. A “verbal
footnote/citation” is simply stating to your audience, during the speech, the source of
your information as you share that information. Students who do not cite the sources
of their information during the speech will have points deducted from their
speech grade.
An example of a verbal footnote/citation is “According to the December 2009
issue of Newsweek, 17% of students…”
Your topic should be timely, worthwhile, and narrow enough to interest your audience. If
pneumonic devices help you, remember the three N’s: choose a topic that is new,
notable, and narrow. A new topic is one that, by virtue of being either entirely unique or
a unique perspective, allows you to provide new information to your audience. A notable
topic is one that your audience would deem important because of its timeliness,
significance, proximity, prominence, or human-interest values. And a narrow topic is one
that can be fully discussed within the time limits of the assignment.
Speech Requirements: Your speech should include:
1. A proper introduction that includes
a. A creative attention-getting device
b. A clear statement of relevance (rapport statement) that orients your
audience by explaining how your topic influences them
c. A clear statement of credibility that explains reasons why you are credible
to speak on your topic
d. A clear central idea
e. A preview of your main points
f. A smooth transition to the body of your speech
2. A body that includes coordinated, logical, and substantive main points that are
a. Fully stated
b. Effectively organized
c. Well supported using at least 3 external sources
d. Smoothly connected using transitions
3. A proper conclusion that includes
a. A clear signal of the end
b. A restatement of the central idea and review of the main points
c. A return to the introductory device
d. A strong ending statement
