There will be a semester long research project. Each student will choose a philosopher and do
scholarly research on their subject’s thoughts on ethics. See the guidelines for topic selection
on Blackboard. Using the Internet is not enough. Each student will submit the name and a
short biographical sketch (one or two paragraphs) of their chosen philosopher no later than
June 5. Failure to have your topic approved as scheduled will result in a grade reduction for
the project.
Students will prepare a paper detailing their research findings. The paper
should be approximately 10 pages. Note papers that do not have proper citations
within the text to indicate the source of ideas will be considered to be plagiarized.

I chose Karl Marx He was born May 5th, 1818 and died March 14th, 1883. He lived in
Germany, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. He had 7 children and was married
to Jenny von Westphalen. He studied Law and Philosophy. His theories about society,
economics and politics is understood as Marxism. Marx actively pressed for its
implementation, arguing that the working class should carry out organized revolutionary
action to topple capitalism and bring about socio-economic emancipation. Marx has
been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. Because of his
work in economics, he laid the basis for a lot of the current understanding of labor and
its relation to capital.
He has to do with ethics because there is a theory called Marxist ethics and it describes
morality as a property of man’s behavior conditioned by his social and historical
existence as those moral values that bring together (or force apart) living individuals. I
think he will be good to write a paper about him because he is well known and there is
plenty of information on him.
