I’m trying to learn for my Philosophy class and I’m stuck. Can you help?

The goals that you have for this paper are to 1) present the material as clearly and accurately as possible, 2) to explain the connection between the ideas presented in each section, and 3) to present the implications that follow if Sartre’s ideas on this topic are accepted.

Format: 5 to 7 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, normal margins etc.

Paper Ideas (Pick One)

1.) Present and explain the difference between “being-for-itself” and “being-in-itself”. How does being-for-itself exist as a lack? And how does this lack explain the existence of values, according to Sartre? Explain Sartre’s notion of the “fundamental project” (which he claims is true for all human beings) as it relates to the for-itself and in-itself, and explain why Sartre claims that this is a “useless passion.”

2.) Present and explain Sartre’s notion of “bad faith.” How does the person in bad faith attempt to treat herself as having the being of the in-itself? What is this person trying to achieve in so doing? How does the person in bad faith attempt to treat herself as a pure transcendence? What is this person trying to achieve in so doing? How might the person of bad faith engage in both of these movements at the same time? (Use examples if that helps illustrate your explanation.) What does bad faith amount to on the individual level and what does it amount to in relation to Others? Finally, what is the “faith” of bad faith?

3). Present and explain Sartre’s view of consciousness, including how it can be pre- reflective, reflective, and self-reflective. What does it meant to say that consciousness is “intentional”? How does this lead to Sartre’s conclusion that consciousness is nothingness? What does it meant to say that consciousness nihilates, or negates? Explain how this illuminates Sartre’s claim that the for-itself is the being that “is what it is not, and is not what it is”?

Overall Advice: Write your paper as if you are explaining this material to someone who is reasonably intelligent, but unfamiliar with the material. Don’t assume that the reader knows what you are talking about just because you happen to mention certain terms.

Be precise, state the obvious, and try to make all of this as clear as possible. Avoid the use of philosophical jargon – especially if you are not absolutely sure of how it is properly used.

Avoid the use of grand and sweeping claims about the history of this debate or its importance. (Example: “Since the dawn of time human beings have debated, wondered, puzzled…blah, blah, blah.” Or, “There is no debate more important to human beings than…bleh!”)

Do not try to be deep, profound, revolutionary, or even all that interesting. Just try to be clear. Its harder than you think.

Try to be as concise as possible while still fully explaining the material.
