This week we learned about different early childhood programs which all have a positive impact on children learning ability. Among all the programs that we learned, the one that I believe serves the best interests of children and families is the “high scope ” program which is based on the theory of Piaget and Vgotsky ( CHFD/Lesson 3, n.d.). This program has some important features, which are an active participation of learners, regular daily planning of activities , and developmentally sequenced goals, an active learning, a classroom management, curriculum and daily activities. This program provides for a child a structured learning environment, which will prepare him for regular schooling . Moreover, the curriculum content of this program is organized into 8 main categories that are approach to learning, social and emotional interaction development, physical development and health, language, literacy and communication, mathematics, creative arts, sciences and technologies and social studies ( McGolerick, n.d.). Some important factors in this program are the spirit of routine as it does make children to know what to expect everyday and the participation of children in the choice of learning activities as this initiative makes children participate in the learning as the activities are chosen by children, so they will chose activities that they are interested in learning.

To me, the high scope program serves the best interests of children and families because the children are constantly and actively involved with the learning and because of the rich curriculum content of this program which is very beneficial for the young learner. Additionally, this program makes the young learner to be independent in their learning , know how to interact with peers and others, become responsible, be able to make decision and so on. There is also the fact that teachers work openly and collaboratively with parents and involve parents in their children’s learning (“our approach, n.d.).

Which features of that program would you most like to eventually incorporate into your own classroom?

In my classroom, I will implement the early literacy program which promotes reading ang writing on time in children. The program believes that learning to read and write is a developmental process which builds on the children’s need to communicate . In my classroom, I will engage with children through pictures,song, writing, role play and ask questions after a short reading so that children can develop communication skills together with reading and writing skills.

There are many forms of high quality childcare programs. The childcare program that I think best suits the needs of children and families are: Montessori. Montessori promotes respect for the child. They are able to work at their own pace and learn through hands-on experiences. Which in my opinion, is one of the most effective ways to learn. Children have the opportunity to learn together in a multi-aged environment. The skills they learn are related to practical life. I would eventually incorporate these ideas in my classroom. Children would benefit from the hands-on experiences and learning from one another. Children are going to gain relationships with other peers and staff members which will create stability and a sense of safety and security. Planned activities are geared towards the curriculum. This curriculum promotes social-emotional, physical, language, and cognitive developments. The curriculum in high quality childcare programs are ideal for any family. You want to know that when you drop your child off they are ok and well taken care of until you get back. Children and families both benefit from these childcare programs. Parents are able to go to work daily and make a living so that they are able to provide for their families. Children are getting this amazing care and gaining these healthy relationships. Teachers are allowing the children to learn at their own pace. I think that is very important. Having worked with children for so many years, and having my own children, I know that you can not force a child to do anything that they don’t want to do. The Montessori approach is great for young children, especially the ones that is their first experience away from home.
