Sue Jones is a registered nurse on a 50 bed medical/surgical unit in an urban not for profit hospital. Sue has been the charge nurse on the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift for over 5 years. For the past 3 years, due to the nursing shortage, Sue has had to take a patient assignment, as well as fulfill her management responsibilities. She prides herself on completing through nursing assessments of her assigned group of patients and feels stressed if her management duties keep her from accomplishing this goal.
Most patients admitted to Sues unit are indigent and are usually extremely ill by the time they are hospitalized. Sue experiences firsthand the health outcomes of people who are uninsured or underinsured and thinks often about what she can do to help her patients (Morris & Faulk, 2012).
