It is important to distinguish which methodology a design is employed as this will allow me to

gather the relevant data. In this chapter, I aim to discuss the approaches I have taken for my

research. I will explain the reasons why I have chosen to use these methods to conduct my

research with the 4 children in a school in Newham. Furthermore, in this chapter, I will also be

discussing the benefits, drawbacks, and the restrictions some of the methods held. Ethical

issues were also considered to and whether it would have any implications on my research.

Time scale and overview of the research

The research was conducted in a four form-entry primary school in Newham. The duration of

the research consisted of 3 consecutive days. Before the research was carried out, consent

forms were given to the participants, parents, and the teacher. Prior to giving the consent forms

to the parents, I have ensured with the headteacher whether it was appropriately lining with the

school policy to give out third party consent forms. The research was explained to the class

teacher to set an appropriate time for children to leave the class.

I carried out the pilot study on the first day of research. Pilot study is a trial run of the intended

research/study without the actual participants. In (2017) mentions that pilot study provides the

researcher with clarity about their research methods as it allows them to see whether there are

any areas for improvements or whether they need to change some aspect of their research. I

have found this very useful as it provided me with a better understanding of how the research

should carry out and whether there are changes that I have to make. During the pilot study, I

ensured that I took notes of how many children were interviewed and how long the interview

process has taken. This also supported my understanding of how long the students may be out

of the class for which enabled me to inform the teacher and provide them with an estimated

time.

The four children that I had chosen for the pilot study were not the participants of the actual

research. This is because, it would be an unethical study if the children already knew the

questions to their interview. This will consequence in gathering inaccurate results (Malmqvist et al.,

2019).

In the second day, I have chosen 2 children from KS1 which consisted of 1 boy and one girl. In

KS2, I have also decided to interview 2 children, one boy and one girl. I have decided this as it

allows me to explore deeper and get a solid understanding of what children think about PE and

what their attitudes are towards the subject. Four of the children were randomly chosen to

participate in the semi-structured interview. The students each received their individual time

slots and all interviews were carried out on the same day. I ensured that none of the children

had PE on the day of their interview as I did not want them to base their opinion in one lesson.

– I have included interview questions to help you with the methodology and make it specific to the questions if necessary
