Managing Healthcare services is difficult as it takes the form of a complex adaptive system. There are indefinite interactions between team members and these interactions are established on the characteristics that each of the individual members of the team possess. Management of complex adaptive system such as healthcare services requires a mechanism that takes the shape of an efficient engine. The complexity within healthcare organizations arises due to its innate nature of diversity of interactions that takes place. The healthcare organizations are dependent on each other which raises the complexity of managing them. We refer to healthcare as systems as they are meant to be setup in a way that they keep on churning the desired results. System in general can be broken down into smaller foundational blocks. Traditionally, if the healthcare system was failing to deliver on the key objectives, then the foundational blocks or services were analyzed individually and optimized for better results (Lipsitz, 2012). Looking at healthcare as a complex adaptive system will help in devising a more effective strategy given the ever-evolving nature of the interactions that take place within them.
Leadership can play a pivotal role in helping healthcare organizations scale and achieve their objectives. Leadership concepts can help leaders in relaying the vision and organizational objectives to the workforce that can help them form an effective strategy to deliver results. Complex adaptive systems has a core focus on cultivating leadership skills by promoting collaboration (Pype, 2018). The top-down approach doesn’t always serve the organization well. Through collaboration and allowing the workforce to become more autonomous and accountable for their actions can help organizations in the long run. Leadership concepts can help the leaders in creating a more outcome driven culture rather than being just output driven. The culture of self-organization must be instilled with the organization and leadership plays an important role in doing so (Glouberman and Zimmermann, 2002). Process improvement is a key aspect of complex adaptive systems and leadership can help in making the workforce subject matter experts in the key processes. Being agile is important in the ever-changing healthcare organizational landscape. We have seen some of the well evolved healthcare services and systems crash during the pandemic (Sturmberg, 2021). This was largely due to the rigid nature of the systems and lack of leadership in making them more agile. Due to that, the system was unprepared to adapt, and the leadership of those organizations failed to devise a compelling strategy. Leadership should set up clear milestone and reward innovative approaches for meeting those milestones and goals.
