Purposes
In this paper, you will demonstrate your knowledge of assessment literacy ? relating instructional goals to methods of assessment and critiquing those methods using a set of criteria including reliability, validity authenticity and fairness.
This assignment enables you to apply your assessment literacy knowledge to the subject area in which you work. During Weeks 5 to 8, you will have investigated a range of assessment methods. In each of these weeks, you will develop an assessment activity in which you apply the assessment method being investigated in your chosen subject area. You will critique that activity using criteria discussed under the assessment literacy theme of the topic (Weeks 1 to 4).
These weekly activities will form the basis of the portfolio that you submit for assessment.
The assignment
Create a portfolio of four assessment activities, each using a different assessment method. Through these activities, you will demonstrate the breadth of your understanding of assessment methods.
Elaboration
You may care to use Table 5.1 from Brown and Race (2013, pp. 79-84) to guide you in selecting and critiquing the activities that you generate. Note that in the table, Brown and Race offer a wider selection of assessment methods than we discuss in class. Feel free to use that list of methods if you believe that they offer methods that would be relevant to your subject area.
In the portfolio, nominate one of the assessment activities that you have generated. Develop it in greater depth than the other three. In this task, you will demonstrate the depth of your knowledge of an assessment method.
As an introduction to the assignment, refer to a definition of assessment so that you can show which aspects of this definition are aIDressed in your assessment tasks. Indicate briefly the context for the assessment activities; i.e. the content domain, the level (pre-primary, primary, secondary, tertiary) of the students.
For each assessment method:
? Specify one or a few learning targets in a learning domain
? Relate the learning targets to content and performance standards
? Describe any resources students will use
? Describe the activities that students will undertake
? Specify success criteria, in terms of the knowledge skills students must demonstrate
? Critique the assessment using criteria for effective assessment.
For the assessment method that you develop in depth, in aIDition to the above:
? Describe the expected performances of just passing, credit and high distinction students (for this, you may develop a rubric)
2
? Indicate the feedback that you will provide to students at the three performance levels.
Judgment
You will need to exercise your own judgment in deciding on ?how much? information to provide. For example, if you choose the multiple-choice method, you should present say one or two examples for a breadth task and four or five for a depth task; but for an essay, you should present a single essay prompt.
In selecting the assessment methods, you will not demonstrate much breadth if you select true-false, multiple-choice, matching and short answer methods. These are all quite similar. Again, you should use your judgment about how diverse the chosen methods should be in order to demonstrate your breadth of assessment knowledge.
Your judgment is also required in your critique of assessment methods. In the modified assessment literacy concept map, I refer to many potential criteria for evaluating assessment methods and tasks. Not all of these are relevant to all assessment activities, so do not feel compelled to refer to all of them. Select those that you believe are most relevant to your chosen purpose, context and task.
Grading
Two aspects of the portfolio will be assessed: the breadth of coverage of methods (30% for the ?breadth? tasks) and the depth of your knowledge of assessment literacy through the ?depth? activity that you nominate (60%). The remaining 10% is allocated to presentation, including language formalities and references.
