I don’t know how to handle this English question and need guidance.

The purpose of the argumentative essay is to present an argument that utilizes Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle (the three persuasive appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos), to convince our audience of something. In order to present a strong argument, you must also look at the entirety of an argument, at all sides, and anticipate what a counterargument (a claim against yours) would be so that you can present evidence against it (this is the rebuttal), essentially crushing the opposing view.

You will need to submit a 1-2 page proposal in MLA format (review MLA format by visiting the OWL at Purdue “MLA General Format” (Links to an external site.) page.

TOPIC: Production and sales of tobacco must be made illegal.

Your proposal MUST discuss:

1. . Your specific topic, including background information on the topic to show you’ve begun your research,
2. Your position on the topic (your thesis),
3. An anticipated a counterclaim to your argument,
4. A rebuttal to the counterargument, and
5. A Works Cited page with at least two credible sources.

After I have read your proposal we will discuss if this is a good topic to pursue or if another should be explored. Your proposal is due Thursday. I will let you know on Sunday, during my online office hour, if your proposal is approved and offer suggestions, as needed.

The subject of your essay may be anything of your choosing. However, it would be wise to choose a subject for which you feel confident you could win an argument. If you are at a loss about what to write, here are a few ideas. Notice how the arguments are very specific. Be sure to narrow down your topic as well to a specific position (thesis) like these.
