ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
Learning to write a research paper is an indispensable skill for architecture students. In
the research process, students learn how to select a suitable research topic, evaluate
primary and secondary sources, and identify the key debates, issues, and theories
related to their topic in the scholarly literature. In addition, students learn how to
organize their thoughts in a logical manner, develop a thesis, and use evidence to
convincingly support their thesis. They also learn how to properly format sources in APA
style and to write using formal language and an objective tone.
The research paper should be thesis-driven (that is, an argumentative research paper).
Students should include a thesis in in the introductory paragraph and topic sentences in
the paragraphs in the body of the research paper to help develop the thesis. Students
should use scholarly evidence to help support their thesis. At minimum, students are
required to use three scholarly secondary sources as the foundation of their research
paper. Before committing to a topic, students should investigate whether they can find
three scholarly secondary sources on their topic. If not, students should select a different
topic. The sources should be cited in the text as well as on a separate references page
at the end of the research paper. Students should also include a figures page(s) at the
end of the research paper, before the references page.
Students should select a topic related to contemporary architecture (from the 1960s to
the present). For example, students may research an architect, an architectural
movement, architectural trends or building types. Please note that students who select
a building or architectural movement discussed in class will be expected to include a
significant amount of material not discussed in class to demonstrate independent
research. Students may want to select a topic that could be further explored in their
upcoming Capstone Research class.

A hard copy of the research paper is due at the beginning of class of Week 13.
Assignments submitted after this date and time will be deducted 10% per day late.
I will review a draft of the research paper one time (not multiple times). The draft
research paper should be emailed to me no less than 72 hours before the due date. I
will review half a page at a time.
Along with the research paper, submit a bound hard copy of the three book chapters
or journal articles referenced in the research paper.
