What is a poster presentation?
A poster presentation is a research paper/project displayed visually.  The idea of the presentation is to create ‘hype’ and promote discussion about your topic among your colleagues.  Poster presentations are designed to inform, educate, suggest evidence based changes to practice, generate ideas… etc.  Your goal should be to choose a topic that interests and excites you and then convey that to others.

Steps in the assignment:
1)    Decide on a topic (see sample topics).
2)    Research your topic – use peer reviewed journal sources.
3)    Summarize your research (choose key articles and pieces of information).
4)    Write an abstract (250 words or less summary of your research).
5)    Design a poster that will prominently display your abstract, as well as key findings, points of interest, needed/warranted changes to practice (see poster design).
6)    Produce your poster.
7)    Be present on March 31, 2014 to represent your poster and answer questions about your topic.

Evaluation:
Each poster group will be required to submit one evaluation for each of the other poster presentations. These peer evaluations will contribute to 50% of the mark. The other 50% will come from the Instructor evaluation. Please see attached Rubric for evaluation criteria.
Poster Design:
There are a large number of internet resources that can guide you in the making of a poster presentation (use an internet search for poster presentation to find them).  When creating a poster there are primarily 2 options.  If you are unclear about the production of a poster please see your instructor for clarification.
OPTION 1:
Some people make their research posters by hand, cutting and pasting text, charts, photographs and anything else that will explain and illustrate their research. These posters are often done on a three-panel display, just like back in your miIDle school science fair days. This style of poster is inexpensive, gives you a lot of space to work with, and can be very effective.
OPTION 2:
Another option is to make your poster on the computer, using PowerPoint. This method is more expensive (a 30? x 40? poster costs around $40 – confirm this) but it is also much quicker to put together, it’s easier to manipulate the design until just right and it looks very professional.
If you choose to go this route, first create a single slide in PowerPoint. Then, blow it up to poster size by changing the dimensions under File –> Page Setup. You’ll need to tack your poster to some poster board to display it, and poster board is commonly available in 30? x 40? sheets, so this is a good size to select.
If you start with a template (just like you’re making a presentation), it will give you things like a background and a color scheme and you can aID other elements to that.  If you start with a blank slide, you can pick whatever background you want and aID all the graphics and text boxes and whatnot that you need.

Disclaimer: Please be advised that other faculty and administration staff (i.e. Dean and Associate Deans) from the School of Health Sciences may be present on the day of poster displays. Furthermore, regional paramedic service representatives will receive an invitation to the poster display presentations.
