ENG 302 GMU Who Is Responsible for Financial Fraud Accountants or The Management Paper the project will be of 12001500 words and will have three sections:
Introduction of 150200 words where you will lay out the necessary context/background, define terms and concepts relevant to your discussion, introduce the question or series of related questions you are seeking to answer, provide a map that tells the readers how the argument will be developed, and briefly mention how you gathered the evidence you have used in the paper to support your arguments.
Discussion: this will be the longest part of your paper. In this section, with the help of at least six articles you will explore the question or questions you have chosen for the project. The discussion should be more than just an X states this and Y states this approach. It should link the discussions of experts taking opposite/multiple sides, agreeing with one another, partially agreeing and proposing alternative ways of looking at the problem, so on and so forth.
Conclusion of about 150200 words where you take a stand on the issue, indicate the need for further research, point to a new direction that needs to be taken, etc.
You will write a 150175-word Abstract where you will present the main points of your paper. You will also explain here why the topic is relevant and important in your major and perhaps beyond. Abstracts help researchers decide whether they want to read the entire article or not. Make sure that your Abstract and Introduction are not the same.
You will provide three Keywords which will help researchers locate your article.
The Abstract and the Keywords are not a part of the 12001500-word requirement for the three main sections of the paper.
You will use at least six articles accessible via Mason library databases for this project. You can use the articles you used in the Anno Bib project but dont have to. If you decide to reuse the Anno Bib articles for the Research Project, then you have to simply add three more sources. At least three of the six articles should be from peer-reviewed scholarly publications and the others can be from Mason accessible newspapers, magazines, peer-reviewed publications, and/or grey literature. You will refer to each of these articles at least once as a brief quote, or a long quote, or a paraphrase and will introduce each with a signal phrase and end with a parenthetical citation following the documentation protocol (MLA, APA, etc.) of your major. You will keep your quotes to a minimum and will use mostly paraphrases. You will not have to use a paraphrase, a brief quote, and a long quote for each article. Guidelines for the Research Project : Exploring a Central Question in Major Project
(37%)
This project will stem from the Annotated Bibliography project and YOU ARE REQUIRED TO
WORK ON THE SAME QUESTION YOU WORKED WITH FOR THE ANNO BIB
PROJECT. If you change topics, I will not accept your project and will not give you a grade
unless you redo the Annotated Bibliography Project to match the Research Project.
Since you have to make multiple draft submissions for this project, make sure that you
know where the submission links are. They should either be in project folder in the Drafts
and Finals subfolder or on the Group Discussion Page.
Dates important to the project:
Mar 16 (Mon):
Classes Resume after Spring Recess
Write a 200-word description of your proposed research question and the two or more angles
you are considering following example in the Resources section of the Research Project folder
and submit it on the Drafts and Finals link in the Research Project folder as Mar 16: 200-word
draft by 11:59 PM. (150 points)
Mar 29 (Sun):
In the Research Project folder Resources section, go over the details of how to incorporate a brief
quote and a long quote in APA and MLA format with signal phrase and parenthetical citation.
This is in preparation for quotes and paraphrases in the Research Project. Submit by 11:59 a 400word draft titled March 29: a 400-word draft with brief quote and long quote with signal
phrase and parenthetical citation on the Drafts and Finals link. (300 points)
Apr 6 (Mon):
Building on the earlier 400-word draft, expand the draft of your research question analysis to 600
words with one brief quote and a long quote, a paraphrase–each with a signal phrase and
parenthetical citation. Follow APA or MLA protocol for the quotes and paraphrases. There are
items in the Resources sub-folder containing examples and tips on using quotes, paraphrases, etc.
properly. (300 points)
Upload as a Word document titled Apr 6: 600-word draft on the Drafts and Finals Submission
link in the Research Project folder by 11:59 PM. On top of page, mention your major,
documentation protocol followed (APA/MLA), and have at least two articles from two
different peer-reviewed sources listed as sources in proper bibliographical format and use
these articles as the sources of the quotes and paraphrases. (300 points)
Apr 9 (Thurs): Building upon the earlier 600-word draft, expand the draft to at least 800 words
and submit on the Group Discussion Board with clearly marked Introduction, Discussion, and
Conclusion sections, one brief quote, one long quote, one paraphrase with signal phrase
and citation, at least four sources listed (at least two peer-reviewed sources and the two other
any type of Mason accessible sources) with database steps outlined. Title the submission Apr 9:
800-word draft. (400 points). NO FORMAL PEER-REVIEW NEEDED FOR THIS DRAFT
Apr 12 (Sun): Expand the 800-word draft to include an Abstract, Keywords, Author
Credentials, Introduction, Body, Conclusion, Works Cited/Reference, SafeAssign
percentage.
Color each source listed in the works cited/reference list in a different color and the
corresponding references marked in same colors. The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that
you have used all the sources you have listed in your bibliography in the text of your paper.
(There is a brief video in the Resources section showing you how to do this.) Submit it as Draft
for peer review on Group Discussion Board. (400 points)
Apr 15 (Wed): Following instructions posted in the Research Project folder, complete peerreview of any of your peers research draft. Post on Group Discussion Board by 11:59 PM as
Apr 15 Peer-Review of Research Project Draft. (550 points)
Apr 19: In the text of the draft,
highlight the signal phrase and the corresponding parenthetical citation for one long
quote, one brief quote, and one paraphrase and using the New Comment feature under the
Review tab on the ribbon on top, indicate that it is a signal phrase introducing a
paraphrase or a quotation. Annotate similarly the corresponding parenthetical citation.
Also, color each source and its corresponding usage in the text. This draft with notations
will make the final grading easier for me because it ensures you have used the correct
kind of sources and have used each source listed in the bibliography and that each quote
and paraphrase has a corresponding presence in the bibliography.
Have at least five sources listed in the bibliography and point out the use of each source
at least once in the draft.
Mention the SafeAssign percentage at the end of the paper.
Mention total word count of the Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion section at the end
of the paper.
Submit this nearly complete draft in Drafts and Finals Link in project folder for 500
points as April 19: highlighted draft
Apr 26 (Sun):
Completed Research Paper due for submission on the Finals link in the project folder by 11:59
PM. SUBMIT TWO VERSIONS. ONE UNMARKED VERSION WITH A TITLE PAGE,
THE FULL ESSAY, BIBLIOGRAPHY, SAFEASSING SCORE, DATABASE STEPS
SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ON THE FINALS LINK.
ONE MARKED VERSION OF THE SAME ESSAY THE SECOND VERSION SHOULD
BE SUBMITTED ON THE LINK TITLED MARKED VERSION OF RESEARCH PAPER.
THIS VERION SHOULD CONTAIN THE FEATURES LISTED BELOW.
Each source in the bibliography highlighted in a different color
One place in the text where you have used that source marked in the same color. Even if
you use the source more than once in the text, you need to mark it only once to show that
you have used the source at least once.
one brief quote with signal phrase and parenthetical citation with annotation (as you have
practiced in earlier drafts) in the margin
only one long quote with signal phrase and parenthetical citation with annotation in the
margin
only one paraphrase with signal phrase and parenthetical citation with annotation in the
margin

While there are no separate points for submitting the marked version, I WILL DEDUCT 50
POINTS FROM YOUR RAW SCORE if the marked version is missing.
All the articles and publications you choose for this project should be accessible via Mason
library databases. You may initially locate articles and publications via Google or other
databases, but they should also be accessible in Mason library links.
What is the purpose of this project?
This project allows you to demonstrate that you understand how knowledge [is created and
how] to investigate a meaningful question through the development of an inquiry-based research
project that evaluates, synthesizes, and incorporates multiple perspectives (Mason Impact
Statement).
The project is a culmination of the enquiry that you have been practicing in the previous projects.
After completing the first three projects, you are ready to answer a question that is current and
relevant in your field with the help of support from academic and credible non-academic sources
collected from the Mason library resources. The goal in this project is to present a complete
picture of a debate or a question that is important in your major. You will write it in a style
suitable for a trade publication. Your content and style will be sophisticated but not overly
complex, since the target audience is your peers of various majors who are not specialists in your
field. The format will follow that of a peer-reviewed scholarly publication with specific sections
such as Abstract, Keywords, Author Credentials, etc.
This project will allow you to accomplish these English 302 Learning Outcomes:
Construct a research paper with awareness of rhetorical situationsaudience, purpose,
and context
Demonstrate that you understand the conventions of academic and non-academic genres,
to include usage, specialized vocabulary, format, and attribution/citation systems.
Apply critical reading strategies that are appropriate to advance academic and nonacademic texts of relevance to your field of study.
Identify and synthesize multiple perspectives in articulating and refining a research
question relevant to your field of study.
Engage in a recursive process of inventing, investigating, shaping, drafting, revising, and
editing to produce a range of academic and non-academic texts of relevance to your field
of study.
The project will allow you to meet these Students as Scholars Learning Outcomes
Follow ethical principles while conducting research
Distinguish between personal beliefs and evidence
Gather and evaluate evidence appropriate to the inquiry
Appropriately analyze scholarly evidence
Explain how knowledge is situated and shared in relevant scholarly contexts
What do you need to know before you get started with the project?
You should be familiar with how articles published journals are set up. While there is some
variety in the component parts of research-based papers, the format to follow in this project is
the one you will find in the student example that I have put in the Resources folder. There
will be a title page with specific features, a header that follows the documentation protocol
(MLA/APA) that you choose, an Abstract, Keywords, Author Credentials, Introduction,
a Discussion section with appropriate headings and sub-headings (the latter as required),
Conclusion, Bibliography (Works Cited/References).
You should know the differences between popular sources (newspaper, magazine, and
grey literature) and scholarly sources (peer-reviewed scholarly journals). Even though
grey literature can be scholarly in some cases, for this project, grey literature will be
considered popular source. If you are unsure about the nature of your source, use the
Ulrichsweb database and type in the name of the publication to find out whether it is a
newspaper, magazine, journal, or something else. Ulrichsweb might not recognize grey
literature but you should know what kinds of documents fall into the category of grey
literature.
You should be familiar with how to navigate Mason library links to gather sources since all
sources for this project will be accessible via Mason library sites.
How will you go about completing the project?
You will write the paper in the third person and not use the first or the second person
pronouns unless they are in the quotations you use. You will be careful in word choice and tone
so that your stance or bias does not come through. Any stand you want to take on the debate will
be indicated in the Conclusion.
Your project will be of 12001500 words and will have three sections:
Introduction of 150200 words where you will lay out the necessary
context/background, define terms and concepts relevant to your discussion, introduce the
question or series of related questions you are seeking to answer, provide a map that tells
the readers how the argument will be developed, and briefly mention how you gathered
the evidence you have used in the paper to support your arguments.
Discussion: this will be the longest part of your paper. In this section, with the help of at
least six articles you will explore the question or questions you have chosen for the
project. The discussion should be more than just an X states this and Y states this
approach. It should link the discussions of experts taking opposite/multiple sides,
agreeing with one another, partially agreeing and proposing alternative ways of looking
at the problem, so on and so forth.
Conclusion of about 150200 words where you take a stand on the issue, indicate the
need for further research, point to a new direction that needs to be taken, etc.
You will write a 150175-word Abstract where you will present the main points of your paper.
You will also explain here why the topic is relevant and important in your major and perhaps
beyond. Abstracts help researchers decide whether they want to read the entire article or not.
Make sure that your Abstract and Introduction are not the same.
You will provide three Keywords which will help researchers locate your article.
The Abstract and the Keywords are not a part of the 12001500-word requirement for the
three main sections of the paper.
You will use at least six articles accessible via Mason library databases for this project. You
can use the articles you used in the Anno Bib project but dont have to. If you decide to
reuse the Anno Bib articles for the Research Project, then you have to simply add three
more sources. At least three of the six articles should be from peer-reviewed scholarly
publications and the others can be from Mason accessible newspapers, magazines, peer-reviewed
publications, and/or grey literature. You will refer to each of these articles at least once as a brief
quote, or a long quote, or a paraphrase and will introduce each with a signal phrase and end with
a parenthetical citation following the documentation protocol (MLA, APA, etc.) of your major.
You will keep your quotes to a minimum and will use mostly paraphrases. You will not have to
use a paraphrase, a brief quote, and a long quote for each article.
There is a list of acceptable and unacceptable sources in the Resources section of the Anno
Bib folder. Take a look at it.
You will provide a bibliography of all sources used and will provide database search steps for all
of these sources. You will not have to analyze the sources as you did in the Anno Bib.
You will run your drafts periodically and your final at least once through Safe Assign to ensure
that you have a match percentage of 15% or lower without the works cited/references page. You
will mention the SA score on the electronic copy (by hand on the paper copy of the finalif you
are required to turn in a paper copy).
The project will be graded according to the rubric that you will find in the course folder. All
drafts and peer comments will be part of the 12% category for drafts, peer critiques, etc.
category. The final will be weighted at 37%.
