Essay 3 Art in an Emergency
Art in an Emergency
Depend on this special situation, COVID-19, now, we are experiencing a special modern time. It
remains me of some other special emergency time in the whole world during the history. We
experienced pandemics, economic depressions, and/or World Wars (I & II). During different
emergency time, people always show different styles to express their heart, their believe and
their opinion to the world.
Instructions
For this final essay, you may choose one of the two prompts listed below. Regardless,
the essay should be a minimum of 600 words, with a proper introduction, a clear argument,
and a proper conclusion. Your essay must incorporate MLA style in-text citations whenever
you are utilizing factual information, or ideas that are not commonly known. Here is an
example of the accepted in line citation format (Jones 63). It should include TWO annotated
sources/citations and TWO art and design examples (with images included).
PROMPT #2: Art in an Emergency: Given our current situation, this paper will focus on past
global emergencies in the modern era, such as pandemics, economic depressions, and/or World
Wars (I & II). The timeframe is from 1900 to 1960. Although we have focused on American
and European artists in class, for this essay I encourage you to also look at non-Western artists
in the same period (1900-1960). Keep in mind the following:
There were serious world-wide repercussions of the financial disaster we call the Great
Depression (1929-1939).
There was a wide-spread climate change event called the Dust Bowl in the 1930’s that
affected the entire American nation (including New York City) and the world.
Two global conflicts (World War I and II) caused millions of deaths, economic disasters,
and a reshaping of geo-political powers.
In these tough and terrifying times (not unlike what we are now experiencing), many
artists took to their medium of choice and described experience, terror, poverty, and death in
their work.
Here are some suggested examples of artists you can research and observe. They are among
the many who represented people’s hardship and pain during harrowing times:
.
Photographer Dorothea Lange and artist Millard Sheets (1930’s Depression in
America)
• Alexandre Hogue for Dust Bowl visuals
• German Expressionist artist Käthe Kollwitz (German pandemic and financial
depression)
• Frida Kahlo (Rise of globalization and the complications of national identity)
• Mexican Impressionists like Gerardo Murillo “Dr. Alt,” Joaquin Clausell, and
Francisco Romano Guillemín (1910 Mexican Revolution, democratization of arts
education, influence on Mexican Social Realism and mural artists)
• Chilean Surrealist artist Roberto Matta (WWI & WWII; Global development in Latin
America)
• Afro-Cuban-Chinese artist Wilfredo Lam (Cuban Revolution; Career spans Cubism;
Interest in hybrid identities, African cultural legacy, and the effects of globalization in
Latin America)
• Constructivist propaganda posters during and after the Russian Revolution
Choose two artists whose work speaks to the terror or major conflicts of their times. Observe
what they represent and how they portray the experience. Questions to consider include:
1. Are these images romanticized or graphic?
2. Why do you think the artists chose to handle their work in this manner?
3. How did their work reflect the angst of their times?
