Much of the scholarship in the area of managing diversity is based on organizational research conducted
in the United States. However, businesses are increasingly operating in a global environment. This
raises new and interesting questions: how diverse are the workforces in other countries? Along what
dimensions of diversity do other workforces vary? What opportunities and challenges have arisen for
business in these countries? How have businesses operating in these countries responded to them?
You will choose a particular country on which to focus and report about a workplace diversity issue
facing businesses in a country other than the US. For instance, you may choose to analyze gender
diversity in the Chinese workplace, racial diversity at work in South Africa, sexual orientation in the
workplace in Dubai, religion in the workplace in France, or how disability affects the workplace in India.
The analysis should consider the history and culture of the country (including how the country
measures on the GLOBE study or Hofstede dimensions), stereotypes and internalized prejudices held
by and facing the population and the members of the workforce you are studying, the cultural and
institutional pressures and biases that exist, laws that address issues of diversity, and what businesses
are doing to address diversity in organizations.
Your analysis should consider what it is like to be a member of the group you are studying in that
country, as well as the resources available to members of that identity group. Students should plan to
conduct online library research, along with reading articles from news sources and other online outlets.
This is NOT intended to be a research project focusing on various business customs and management
conventions in the workplace (such as you might focus on in International Business). You should focus
on a relevant primary identity group that exists in the country you choose to study and explore the
dynamics associated with that aspect of diversity as they relate both to that country’s society at large as
well as to their workplaces.
