Chapter 10
Provide a short summary of the reading taking key points and highlighting them (minimum 350 words)
Please also answer the following questions:
1) What makes one behavior atypical but the other paraphilic? What underlying standards are being applied? Note also that these standards change: masturbation was once considered pathological.
2) Discuss how pathology often reflects societal norms, using examples of masturbation and excessive sexual intercourse. Who gets to determine what is normal? Are there some behaviors that are inherently pathological or does pathology fundamentally reflect societal norms? Explore paraphilia within the context of society, culture, and history.
3) Should people that have pedophilic urges be required to seek treatment, even if they have had no sexual contact with children? Should a pedophile be treated differently if the child was not forced and reports no feelings of victimization? What do you think the age of consent should be?
