Comparing Perspectives
One of the most common intellectual activities (and also one of the most difficult) is to formulate your
own answer to a question after you’ve carefully considered multiple points of view. The advantage of
having compared perspectives, though, is that you gain a much broader perspective of what’s at stake
in a topic –why it’s important and what it means to different people.
For this assignment, you will write a 1200-1500-word (4-5 page) essay that articulates your position on
a topic after considering three other perspectives on the same topic.
The essays will be based on one of several different topics presented by The New York Times “Room
for Debate” series. While you will read all of the articles associated with your topic, you will choose
only THREE of these short articles as the basis for your synthesis essay.
Your task is to serve as the final contributor to your “Room for Debate” topic. You will synthesize
three of the perspectives in your “Room for Debate” topic, and then after demonstrating that you
understand and can explain three of the perspectives, you will articulate your position.
This task requires that you
1. Carefully read all of the articles included in the “Room for Debate” topic that you chose;
2. Understand, analyze and summarize three articles within your topic;
3. Identify a synthesis question based on your reading of these three articles around which you’ll
organize your essay;
4. Synthesize these three articles to articulate your own position on the topic as if you were the
final contributor to this “Room for Debate” panel.

A statement of the synthesis question that shows why it is both “problematic” and significant.
Short summaries of the texts to give your readers a sense of the readings you are working
with—and to show that you understand and can explain the other authors’ arguments fairly.
A thesis statement that both shows your synthesis of the readings and forecasts your own
response to the synthesis question.
Your analysis of key points in these texts, determined partly by the synthesis question.
Your own response, which combines ideas gathered from the readings with your own
independent ideas.
Correct in-text citations and works cited page using MLA documentation.

Quality of Revision (10%)
o The writer has made substantive and thoughtful changes based on the comments of the
instructor and peers.
Focused Synthesis (20%)
o The essay is focused on a question that arises out of the writer’s careful reading of three
articles on a similar topic; the essay provides a thesis statement that represents the
writer’s new thinking on the topic after having considered other points of view. The body
of the essay adequately develops this thesis.
Appropriate Summary and Analysis of Articles (20%)
o The writer adequately and fairly summarizes the points of view of three other essays on
the topic and analyzes their points in relation to each other.
Organization (20%)
o The essay is organized coherently as a whole and at the paragraph level by one of the
organization schemes on pg. 321. Strong topic sentences help the reader to easily make
sense of and follow the essay’s ideas.
Appropriate Citation (20%)
o The essay includes (and properly incorporates) quotations from the original article. The
essay avoids plagiarism, either intentional or unintentional, by using attributive tags and
page citations where appropriate.
Proper Editing and Format (10%)
o Including correct use of MLA citation style. The essay is free of spelling, punctuation, and
other mechanical errors, and is formatted properly. It is in MLA format, and includes a
Works Cited page.
